Well, that didn't work. Let's try something else!
I have an 83 Ranger 4x4 with the 4 speed manual. The slave cylinder has started falling off the side of the transmission. I can crawl under and put it back in place, but whatever is supposed to hold it on is either missing or broken. It will stay in place for a little while but it doesn't take long before it falls off again.

I've had very little luck after days of google searches. The closest I could find is this Autozone tech article that shows a "dust cover". http://www.autozone.com/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0900c152800781f6 I'm not sure if that's what keeps it in place but mine either fell off or autozone has the wrong info. If that is how it's held on, anyone know where I can get one?

Please help if you can. I'm at my wits end.

The pressure from the clutch holds it in place.

In the page you posted look at the "Removal" procedure for slave cylinder.

Push it rearwards(towards the clutch fork) then pull it outwards(away from transmission)

The Slaves holder/"fork" may be worn or broken so when slave is being push forward against the holder it can still slide out.
Or clutch is worn down too much and so it is not pushing back hard enough to hold slave back far enough.

Ah! Thanks. I thought it was odd that none of the replacement slave cylinders included a clip. The clutch still engages really well with no slip, but I suppose it's possible that a clutch job is in order.
