I am going to put an electric fan on my 87 5speed 4 wheel drive. I was just wanting to know if I need to go with a 16 in fan or would that be over kill. I have looked at 10, 12, 14, and 16 inch fans. THe truck no longer has AC on it so that will not be a problem. It also wont be a truck that sees much stop and go traffic, mostly rebuilding it to be a weekend driver for camping fishing and maybe some light off road use(trails mostly). Also which is better using it as a pusher or puller or is there really a difference.

Also would it be better to leave the factory shroud on or take it off. Would it help with air flow or hurt it.

use a 16

run a 4cyl fox fan switch and a 40 amp relay.

cheap and easy.

thing is i dont like the cheap parts store fans...rather run an oem application...like a taurus or dodge minivan etc...

bobby that helps but would it be better as a pusher or puller. THe only reason I am even going to the electric fan is because the last day I drove "blue" I lost a blade off the factory fan, so I figured since it is in for a transmission swap I just as well go ahead and fix all the little things also.

I would go with the 16" puller. A puller fan is more efficient than a pusher fan (and a pusher fan with a puller fan is even more efficient :) The shroud is kinda pointless unless the fans outer diameter matches the shrouds inner diameter ( like the stock fan), the shroud acts like a funnel so the fan can suck the air through the radiator more efficiently. I running a 16" puller with out the shroud and I have no over heating problems.

P.S. look into the electric fan thermostat kits, relay kits, switch/control kits.
