What should this be connected to?

I removed the bed on my "new" 98 Ranger 2WD to change out the fuel sender not sending fuel levels and discovered this box attached to the frame. The top said "To Cat" so I am assuming that it is part of the evap system. The trouble is that the other side of the box has a fitting that is clearly meant for a hose but I have no idea what it is actually supposed to connect to. Any help is appreciated!

Looks like the charcoal canister, which would be part of the evap system. That large port looks like the fresh air intake for when it purges the canister. I don't think it gets a hose.

The evaporative emission (EVAP) system:

  1. stores fuel vapor with the engine off.
  2. controls fuel vapor while the engine is running.
Fuel vapor flows from the fuel tank (9002) through two fuel vapor vent valves (9B593) to the evaporative emission canister (EVAP canister) (9D653) through the EVAP canister tube (9A228) and to the engine through the EVAP canister purge outlet tube(9D661) when the evaporative emission canister purge valve (9C915) is opened by the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650).

The evaporative emission canister purge valve:

  1. regulates purging of the evaporative emission canister.
  2. is controlled by the powertrain control module.
  3. contains the evaporative emission test port.
The evaporative emission canister:

  1. contains activated carbon.
  2. stores fuel vapors.
The fuel vapor control valve tube assembly (9G332):

  1. is centrally located above the fuel tank.
  2. inhibits the flow of liquid fuel passing to the evaporative emission canister during refueling.
The fuel tank pressure sensor (9C052):

  1. monitors the fuel tank pressure/vacuum.
  2. provides a fuel tank pressure reading to the powertrain control module during the OBD II test.
Pressure readings are accessible with the scan tool.

The fuel vapor vent valve:

  1. mounts directly to the top of the fuel tank.
  2. are not serviced seperately on composite fuel tanks.
The canister vent solenoid:

  1. is mounted to the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister.
  2. can be serviced separately.
  3. seals the evaporative emission system for the OBD II leak check.
  4. can be closed with the scan tool.
The fuel tank filler cap (9030):

  1. relieves fuel tank pressure above 14 kPa (2 psi).
  2. relieves fuel tank vacuum below 3.8 kPa (0.53 psi).
The evaporative emission dust separator:

  1. is located on the side of the evaporative emission canister bracket.
  2. prevents suspended dust and dirt particals from entering the evaporative emissions system.
  3. is serviced as a separate item.
Here is the attachment with the numbers in the top list.

What engine do you have in this truck @Danh72 ?

I really want to move this info @franklin2 shared to the correct engine forum so it might help others that may need it in the future.
