Preparing for a 5.0 swap in two weeks. Using a 97 sploader i got for 500 bucks. Currently driving the explorer to make sure the engine and trans are solid.

Anyways, what should i replace on the engine when its out of the truck?
160k motor and trans
Power steering is questionable, so pump and lines are being replaced.
Spark plugs will be replaced.
Accessory bracket has a crack near a bolt, and will be replaced.
Exhaust manifolds will be replaced with torque monsters.
Not sure on plug wires.
Not sure on head gaskets.
Thoughts about this list, and any additions?
Thanks,
Chris

If it runs fine, I'd leave the heads on for now, but it's easy enough while it's out to remove the oil pan and check the main bearings for wear. Front and rear main seals are very inexpensive, and I'd place them high on the "might as well" list.

The Cam Position Sensor/Synchronizer can go belly up on high mile engines. Not only is this a bad thing for injector timing but the Synchronizer is also what drives the oil pump. If it seizes, it's goodbye engine. I'd replace for peace of mind. There are some real crappy Chinese knockoffs on eBay and in the chain auto parts stores. OE Ford costs more but is 10x better IMO.

Even if you aren't going for a complete rebuild, you should at least consider valve guide seals. Mine were crispy at about half the miles yours has. There are techniques that allow the seals to be replaced without pulling the cylinder heads.

Speaking of crispy, be careful of the electrical connectors on the fuel injectors. These get very brittle and can be easily broken if you try to remove them.

Tranny filter for sure.
Front and rear crank seals.
Water pump.
DPFE sensor if equipped.
