he asked what gauges would work, a speedometer is a gauge, and the gear on the end of the cable will be different for the new trans.

and yes, he could swap new senders into the engine, but he needs to get the senders for the engine he is putting in.

You're wrong here bud, All Ford transmissions used the same speedo cable connections. No matter the transmission. Now, some have different locations for the speedo hole in the tail (driversside vs passengerside) and that makes a difference in whether or not the speedo will work Plug in the wrong side and the odometer will run backwards. And there's a difference between auto and manual transmission cable gears, but either will operate off the tailshaft gear. The gauge wiring for the EFI will work regardless of engine induction type, so you're half wrong here. :thefinger: We're all talking about FORD motors here, not Chebby's :icon_rofl::icon_rofl::D
 
ok well i got a price for 250 for an explorer axle, i am also going to use explorer rear leaf springs, is there a wiring diagram for carb motors.

There are wiring diagrams for components, but otherwise you are on your own:

I just used a Helm Inc. diagram for my '88 as reference and just 'knew' what needed to be wired in and used that as a guide on what would be a good way to go about doing it. I don't know if you'd be able to find a specific diagram because of the different options that you have.

this is a ford site, but any ways back to the subjuct, what would be a good auto trans to use
 
I used to run an AODE (computer controlled AOD) which i paid $1700 with converter. I had to take it back to the builder 3 times in the first yr after giving me a new case and another rebuild it lasted another yr. C4 would be my choice if I were going auto again. BTW wanna buy a slightly used AODE? (paperweight)
 
Doesn't an AODE need an aftermarket controller w/ a carb? C4 would be easier, AOD will work too, but needs the kick down linkage and it needs to be set properly (either with pressure gauges or by a trans shop). Benefit of an AOD is O/D, C4 is a 3 speed.

Your 7.5 will hold just fine. They used them stock in 302 Foxbodys.

As far as the gauges, theres no reason they shouldnt work.

i dont feel the love here, is the whole point of this v-8 swap forum is to put a v-8 in a truck that doesnt have one. i will most like go with the c4, i dont care about o/d it is not my daily driver.
 
The 8.8 is a bolt in up grade.
When you modify the front why not modify the back,plus you could get lucky and score rear disc brakes with the 8.8.
 
I've got a 1963 MX transmission (forerunner of the better known FMX) hanging from my shop's rafters and the speedo cable hole is exactly like all the rest of the Ford transmissions that came afterwards. Your Dad's 2 speed (I'll bet) has the same hole. The Ford part numbers for the speedo cable gears (when you can still find em at the dealer, are still early 60's numbers (which were updated from the 1950's parts numbering system) And We Do agree (on somethings) that a carb setup is easier to wire :icon_thumby: or at least on an 89 ranger. I was so intimidated by the EFI wiring, that I left em in place on mine, afraid to pull something that would further complicate the swap (8 years ago) They're all tucked away against the firewall, out of sight. I'll try in the future to not rib you about your mistaken ventures:sorrysign::badidea::D into Chebby powered Fords, but when and if I do though, just remember it's all in fun.:icon_thumby: Chevy DID finally come around to Ford's way of building engines once they got past the SBC production. Just as Ford did in copying and improving the BBC design in the 60's with the 335(Clevelands) and 385 series engines (429/460 ) And I've always thought the second gen S10 is a sharp looking ride. I had one briefly a few years back I'd bought as an investment (96 ext cab, solid black with a 4 banger 5 speed) and had I not sold it, It would have received a SBF powerplant transplant.
