What should i do with my 4.0?

Amen. If an engine is out, has a bit of miles, and doesn't smoke I'd drop a crank kit in it (assuming it's possible to do on the particular engine without removing the pistons. $200 or less for good crank clearances while the engine is already out is a good deal IMO.

ok well im not guna go that deep. at that point i might as well rebuild the whole motor. ill do almost all the seals and gaskets (not doin the head gaskets but will check to make sure the head bolts are tight) but should the motor decide to let go internally then so be it, ill just go buy a lower milage motor at that point or build that one into a 300-400 hp motor if the block didnt break.

at this point i just ordered: rockers, push rods, clutch, flywheel, plugs and wires, thermostat, waterpump, oil filter, belt, idler pully, and a engine seal gasket kit. $560 bucks, i love having a discount at NAPA :D

If you do end up doing pulling the crank, be sure to use rod bolt condoms so that the crank can't get damaged by the rod bolts when removing and installing.

I don't think it's possible to just pull it out with the pistons in their original locations. Since it's a V, the crank will more than likely get caught between the rod bolts. Some of the pistons would need to be dropped down further into the cylinder in order to get it out. IMO.

If it's a consern, you could also plastigauge the clearances to make sure it's good.

Thats what i would do before deciding on a crank but as of right now i have no reason for concern on it. its that old addage of "if it aint broke dont fix it" ya know. im not worried about those internals

I'm surprised you're going to spend that much money on an engine that you know the history on, and say was taken care of. I've got 248k on my engine, and it's never been touched (oil, filter, wires and plugs don't count, in my opinion). Never replaced any type of gasket. I don't hot rod it, but I'm not as friendly as grandma, either. The most serious thing I've ever done is check to make sure the intake manifold was tightened correctly about two years ago.

Considering you can get a used engine for less then $500 (I bought a whole drive train for $250), it doesn't make sense to spend that much on a known-good engine. I wouldn't spend more then $100 getting it prepped to pop in. Save the $500 and see if you can get another 100k out of it for free.

When used engines are so cheap, it's hard to justify, in my opinion, spending that kind of money on an engine.

That's not too bad, but if it was me I would have to go ahead and rebuild the entire engine, unless somebody was really holding me back.

well knowing the history of the motor is very helpful as compared to goin and gettin a junkyard one that no one knows of and did you read what im using this motor for? i know i will not be gettin 100,000 more miles out of this motor let alone a new one. as far as parts for just the motor its only 300 bucks, rest is for clutch and tranny.

i agree but right now its not worth the time or money. if it does go its not like its my DD so i can let it sit and build it really sweet but right now i want to get everything in and runnin right so when i do pull the motor thats all ill have to worry about. i guess to me i just cant justify spending the money to rebuild a damn good runnin motor, jsut repalce seals that the arizona heat likes to dry out.
