ok so i got my ohv 4.0 out and all cleaned up from the doner exploder. i hae to replace teh vavle cover gaskets, the o-ring on the distributor hole plug and maybe the intake manifold gaskets while im there since its on an engine stand right now but i was wondering what else should i look into or replace while i got it out? it has 150,000 on it but a easy 150 (grandma drove it very easy and dad always kept on maintnance). im also replacing the plugs an wires. it does not tick and the head gaskets dont leak any. here are some pics of before and after i washed it. i think that the timeing cover may be leaking but im not sure as there was a ton of grease on this thing.

looks like you cleaned it up good! So how much longer until its dirtier than as it was when you pulled it? If the manifold gaskets were leaking now would be a better time to change them

I changed the valve cover gaskests and intake manifold gasket on mine while it's sitting on the shop floor, screw doing it in the rig.

haha probably not too long after, racing takes a toll on stuff lol but i could not tell if it was leaking due to all the oil and grease. i will probably change them anyhow since the gaskets are probably only a couple of bucks.

yeah i definitely agree on that. why put it in the truck then F*** with changin gaskets or plugs when its WAAAAAAY easier to do when its out of the truck.

Oh one other question. what is the torque on the head bolts. i figure if the valve covers are off i might as well check and make sure the bolts are tight.

I'd replace the coolant pump and the thermostat if they have 150K on them and are on a stand..
Big JIm

replace that fram filter while your at it...

haha oh i will be. dont worry too much about that although i was gunna put a napa one on till we had a DPS vehicle come in today with a cunk of RTV lookin stuff in the teh oil passage on teh right head. come to find out the stuff teh use to hold teh filter element to the canister had broken off and sent it through the engine :fie:

nice job, how did you clean the engine so well, any special cleaners/products?

two cans of engine clean (spray on cleaner that you put on before you hose what ever it is down) and a pressure washer, wish i had pics of what i looked like after, it all went from that motor to me! i really came off pretty easy and only took me two rounds on it. it was 2" deep of crud in some areas!

Since the engine is on a stand, replace the oil pan gasket, both main seals, and possibly all the core plugs. Those are the ones that are not merely painful, but rather impossible on an installed engine. And if you're not sure on the timing cover, replace its gasket too (this makes the front seal substantially easier).

And if it's a stick, the clutch and flywheel.

When you did the valve cover gaskets did you check the pushrod ends and rockers for wear. That's the weak spot on the OHV. The pushrod tips wear and then it starts ticking.

yep,you should pull off the rocker assemblies and swap out the worn rocker arms and pushrods from another used engine.my roll over special has low oil pressure and still had no ticking since i swapped out the worn top end parts.even the motor i had with 50,000 miles had some terminal rockers on it

ok ill probably do that. any high performance ones that are worth spendin the money on? like i said this will be raced.

i have not do teh seal yet so i have not been able to look at them quite yet.

well, since nobody else said it, i might as well throw it out, why not roll it over on the stand and check your bearings while your at it, if they're only a little wore and not to the copper, you might be able to replace them with no work to the crank.

Amen. If an engine is out, has a bit of miles, and doesn't smoke I'd drop a crank kit in it (assuming it's possible to do on the particular engine without removing the pistons. $200 or less for good crank clearances while the engine is already out is a good deal IMO.
