what position does what on the 4wd stick in an 84 ranger

im sure this sounds like a dumb question, but ive never owned a 4wd vehicle before, the shift knob on the 4wd selector stick is completely worn, and the front diff on the truck is cracked so i dont want to experiment to see what position does what and risk grenading it the rest of the way... so what position of that 4wd selector stick does what.. i know its 2wd 4wd hi and 4wd lo.. just dont know what all the way forward or all the way back does


i traded a motorcycle for this thing for purposes of hauling around car parts.. but i figure i may as well throw a new front diff in it and have 4wd as well. if anyone that sees this is near indiana, i am in the market for a stock dana 28 front diff!

2hi : all the way forward
4hi : 1 click straight back from all the way forward
N : to the left and back of 4hi
4lo : back and to the right of 4lo aka all the way back.

thanks!! does the neutral position of the 4wd stick affect all 4 wheels as well? if i have the 4wd stick in neutral but the main gearshift in gear, the wheels still wont spin?



i realize these are basic questions, but like i said.. the truck works fine in 2wd as it is so i dont want to mess with it until i find another diff

I wouldnt drive it till I fixed the diff.

If the Tcase is in neutral, it's just like a transmission in neutral.......no power to any wheels.
