My credo
Tighten it until it snaps then back off a 1/4 turn
I am thinking about a 5.0 or to be exact 347 in my ranger. I want auto trans. What are my options besides C-4 , FMX , AOD ? Any custom bell housings to adapt something newer?

Ultrabell makes adapters for basically anything. I had Chevy turbo 400 behind my 460.

The 4R70W was used behind the 5.0s also.

From your list of automatics are we to assume you are not using EFI, so want no computer?

That pretty much takes "newer" automatics off the table, they need a computer controller for shifting

If you will be using EFI then the computer you decide on will have trans models it can operate

There are stand alone transmission controllers, they are on the expensive side, $700+, but that would allow you to use any newer transmission that can be adapted to the Windsor pattern

Hi Ron, yes I want EFI. Of course this is all in the, gee I wish stage right now. Not against EFI at all, just know old trans. Old Guy, newer cars. Wreck looking for a place to happen.

I'm a fan of the 4R70W, the one in my Explorer with some slight modifications and a shift kit drives great, and from what my buddy says should stand up to 400hp. There's quirks but it does what I tell it to do. It's just an electric version of the AOD or thereabouts kinda like a 4L60E is a fancier version of a 700R4... Like any auto trans, none of them will stand up to neutral drops and certain abuse, but with some care the 4R70W is probably your best bet since Ford changes bellhousings like underwear :)

My plans are similar to yours, sorta. In the near future (hopefully starting this winter) I want to build the Explorer and put a 347 kit in it for offroad purposes. Don't know if I'll do the engine stuff at the same time as the suspension, we'll see. My friend put the transmission together with that in mind, my goals are to be in the 300-350hp range to keep it fun but hopefully reliable.
