What Oil do you run?

I just bought my Bronco II last week and while I have 1500 miles till an oil change is required I was wondering what oils you ran. I've heard that a synthetic is a must in the 2.9 so what do you guys run, and other than a 2000 mile change the first time is there anything else you suggest when I convert?

2000 mile change? Why bother?

Oil is oil. If you want to switch to synthetic and back again 800 times, just do it.

This is what the API and SAE ratings are for. If they are the same, the oil is the same to the engine.

I run Mobil1 Synthetic 5w-20. Always a fan of synthetics, I assume for longer protection, and hopefully less breakdown, since I drive my truck hard.

I run Motorcraft Synthetic Blend 10w-30. I have had good luck with Motorcraft oil filters, too.

valvoline in my gassers and rotella in my diesels.

But what about switching to a synthetic oil in a higher mileage engine? I'm considering it, but with 79K on the engine, I don't want to run into any of the leakage problems. Do yall think it will cause a problem? Maybe I should start with a blend?

In my experiences, the "synthetic makes old engines leak" thing is a myth. I wouldn't (and don't) hesitate to swap to synthetic no matter what the mileage.

Does it leak now? If it does, it will leak with synthetic. If it doesn't, it's really not very likely.

I've switched four vehicles to synthetic oil with six figure mileage. No, they haven't blown themselves into little bits. Three of them are still on the road with factory original engines (see my signature). The fourth had an engine swap (Bronco II with 4.0L).

conventional pennzoil 20w50 in the summer 10w40 in the winter, with napa gold filters

Personally, I'm a fan of Chevron products. I run 15W-40 Delo in my truck (yeah yeah, it's diesel oil), with Fram Tough-Guard oil filters. Never given me a problem, I always have awesome oil pressure, and it comes out looking like it did when it went in. Oil changes are done about 3000-3250 miles apart (whenever I get the chance).

You put Delo in your truck? What was the reasoning? because its around 10 bucks a gallon.

If it's API SL rated, it's fine. And it quite likely is -- MANY Diesel oils work just fine with spark ignition, though the reverse is not true.

BUT, do not put 20W-50 in an engine designed for 10W-30. Your oil clearances are smaller, and you depend upon the correct (or nearly so) viscosity in order to make lubrication films. If you don't, you damage things.

Older engines generally take 10W-30 year round anywhere the climate isn't ridiculously cold (meaning, below 0 deg F with the vehicle stored outside with no block heater). Use 5W-30 if it's ridiculously cold.

I run Orielly's in my Ranger, probably going to switch to Valvoline next oil change.

In my wife's Explorer, 4.0, it rattles after about 2500 miles (sounds like the chain?) with the cheap stuff, doesn't do it will Valvoline.

In my 74 Comet, I ran Havoline 20w/50 to keep up pressure and keep down burn off on an old, worn engine. Planning on a tight rebuild as soon as finances allow.
