What motor is in 1988 Ranger?


Both. Could probably look it up on versus the vin or post a pic and someone can get you on the right track.

if im not mistaken, my dad used to have a 88 ranger with a 2.0, i dont think she was a freaky unicorn
 
Easy way to tell...if it's carburated...it's a 2.0...if FI...2.3

I had a 2.0 regular cab s/b 88. I didn't think it was a freaky unicorn either.

How many thousand miles will the motor go?

Unless your psychic, pick a random number. :D No way to tell, obviously if it's over heating or has low oil pressure, not that long. But otherwise that is difficult to estimate..

I had one that was blowing oil and managed to get another 100,000 Km (60,000 miles) out of it before it finally detonated...literally...

Telltale signs of blowing oil...look at the area around the dipstick...including the firewall, brake master, and frame...if you see oil splattered about then it is seriously suffering from blow-by where the oil actually comes out the dipstick...

In some cases you can remedy this by changing the PCV and cleaning out the base of the carburator...but you may also find it pooling in the breather where it comes in from the cap on the valve cover...this may also be corrected by the PCV change and cleanup...

How many miles are on the truck now, and what is the condition of the firewall, A-pillar (look inside the driver and passenger doors just below the hinges for the door), and floor panels...

If the engine isn't toast and the rust is minimal you might have yourself an inexpensive and fun to work on vehicle...
