What mods should I start with?

I got a 2003 Ranger with the 3.0 and am looking for some good mods to start with. I was thinking a K&N intake with a new upper intake manifold and throttle body. I also want to get a new exhaust, probably Gibson, but am contemplating whether or not to get headers or just leave the stock manifolds. I don't know about getting a tune though, cause from what I have heard, you have to run premium with them, and I don't want to pay extra for the gas.

Any help would be appreciated guys.

Thanks-Charlie

None of the above will give you anything except maybe a little noise. The mods you refer to might even slow the lil engine down..
Ford gave you all there is in that engine. Unless you want to take the engine out and do some serious internal modifications, none of that will help milage or power..

Damn, well then it looks like I will just save my money and spend it on exterior mods...

throttle cable mod is pretty sweet and you can do it with a zip tie, and i doo really like my superchips tuner which you can run regular gas

Do a search.

Start out with an Underdrive pulley---if you can find one anymore and an electric fan. There are a few worthwhile bolts-ons for the 3.0.

Froggmann, I see in your sig that you have a "removed air silencer", may I ask what that is?

It's between the lower part of the airbox and the passenger side headlight. You have to remove the lower part of the airbox to pull it out. It doesn't make any difference in power, it just makes the intake noise more prominent at WOT above 3k rpm.

Intake doesnt do too much, but it does provide the nice sound. Currently I am working on putting engine insulation on my K and N system to get the temps as low as I can in that area. My goal is to get down a bit further than what the stock system would be able to get to. Surface area is the other advantage with the cone filter on the K and N, yeah it doesnt mean more air will enter the engine, BUT it allows more air to be readily accessible for a quick tap on the throttle.

Truly the only things I have gotten out of the K and N are noise and throttle response. Gas mileage may or may not have increased, might have by .5 or something but nothing more.

I love my exhaust system. Many argue on whether it causes the truck to lose or gain power. My butt dyno says it helped top end just a tad, but the main reason for having mine is the sweet melody of the Magnaflow... The fact that I can turn heads while driving my little Mazda B3000 says something lol.

I've also done under drive pulleys which helped ever so slightly.

I think I'm done with engine mods, going too crazy just leads to trouble and a waste of money, that is, unless u are serious.

The last thing Im going to do is get an X Cal engine tuner for a performance tune. I'll have to let ya know how that goes, it's probably a few months away.

After all is said and done, the light mods have indeed made my truck more fun to drive, THAT, I can attest to, horsepower I CANNOT guarantee... lol

Oh and if u have a stick shift, while the Hurst Shifter is very enticing DONT BOTHER, unless ur ready to design it to prevent over pressurization of the tranny and leaks everywhere. I'm currently modifying the shifter so that it will not leak, but it is a PITA.

Exterior modding, rims, and interior insulation is on my to do list next. Already have a sound system. It's EASY to install a creative and enjoyable one in these rangers, especially if u have an extended cab. Go for that if u enjoy music.

HAPPY MODDING :icon_thumby:
