I see mostly post for 5.0, 302's, and 351's, I just got a 95 T-bird with the 4.6 and auto trans, and I'm thinking that this is the new donor for my 88 ranger super cab, I was going to do the 4.0 out of a 93 explorer, but things have changed, and hopefully for the better.

any advice on what kind of mess I'm going to get into, and also do I have to do the aircond mod for the head to fit???

Beats me......................but I'm positive that you can DO IT !!!!

:yahoo:

Gonna be tougher that a SBF.....the 4.6 is much larger than even a 351W.

There is a very complete build thread using a 4.6 around here somewhere.:icon_confused:

The good news is "trucks" (tv show) did this at one point, albeit to a later model truck. At lead it will give you some idea of what clearancing will need to be done.

But yes I believe the A/C will have to be modified.

You are going to need lots of body lift. The apex of the 4.6L is very wide and will not clear the inner fenders properly at stock height. It will probably also be a very tight fit at the bottom.

For comparison, the 4.6L is on the left and the 5.0 on the right.

Good Lord, Guess I need to sell the T-bird, and find a 5.0 Mustang.....

I read somewhere that the 4.6 came with two different types of heads, one being a 2 valve, and one being a 4 valve per cylinder, how do you tell the difference, or is there such a thing ???

I am almost done swapping a 2 valve 4.6 into a 99 ranger and I can tell you it is no where near as difficult as others make it out to be.

The only difficult parts for me was the exhaust and the damn oil filter adaptor.

For the exhaust I made simple log style manifolds, they will not flow as well as headers but they were cheap and easy to make and fit well.

The oil filter is another story entirely. I was going to use the factory remote setup used by some expeditions and f150s but that did not fit so now I am going to try the setup e vans use. I will get back to you with results of that.

4V is a little bigger, they only went in Cobras, Mach 1s and big boats of cars that I don't keep track of. The '05-'09 Mustangs had a 3V.

They also put the 5.0 HO in T-Birds as well.

The four valve head is massive, as shown above.

They are all huge. :D

In a TIB/TTB truck we are probably too mild.

You can expect to not modify but delete your ac/heater box. With a 5.0 swap and no body lift you need to modify for valve cover clearance. The sohc 4.6 in the t bird you have is quite a bit wider, by close to 6" each side. I'm not saying it can't be done, and my next swap I'd like it to be the 4.6/5.4. I'll gladly help you out if you still want to tackle this :icon_thumby:

Hello, I put the 2 v 4.6 in my 2001 Ranger Edge 2wd. Check out the thread by searching Rjaaaaaa, I detailed it pretty well although your's is an earlier year. Mine went well, the wiring was a bit stressful but it all worked out good. I've got nearly 4000 miles on it since the swap and everything is working great. It gets down the road pretty good too.
