New to the ranger station but not new to the ranger. I started out in my dads '86 with a 2.9 then moved to a '96 with the 2.3 and now own the '96 a '92 a '93 and working on getting another '86 only this has 4 wheel drive :headbang: I do have a question for whom ever can give me some advice...I'm in the process of building a 5.0 for the '96 and I want to run a 9" rear axle cause I plan on trying to push 300hp to the rear and def want to run a posi what I need to know is a good size rear axle to use I would like to avoid cutting the rear axle to make it fit but if i have to then I will... :icon_welder: Thanks for the input. Swat
 
Welcome to TRS - sorry I cannot help with your question though. Only familiar slightly with the Explorer axle swap and it is an 8.8.

I think with only 300 RWHP you would sure be safe in just using the stock 8.8 Ranger rear end, bolt right in. Sure would save a lot of fab work. It's not the Hp but the torque that ruins drivelines. Throw in a steep gear and some wide tires, yep, going to break something. The '67' 9" rear is real close to being the right width but spring perches have to be moved and even then the center section might not be the stong one.
