what is the round thing that is in the valve cover?

That's part of your PCV system. The actual valve itself is on the opposite valve cover.

My problem is that its not listed in my chiltons manual and I have taken it to two parts stores and they dont know what the name is so that I can order another one.

they do carry it, I have bought several at advance, FRAM Part # BA6592

Thanks for the part number it is very much appreciated. You said you have bought several of these. Do they mess up that often? Just wondering if I should pick up more than one when I go.

there are no moving parts inside it, it is just a filter in a plastic housing, they do get brittle and fall apart sometimes though. As long as air flows through that filter and it is not falling apart it does not need to be replaced. The PCV valve is on the other valvecover and should be replaced regularly though
