my 5 speed is making a very loud clunking noise. it runs fine but it sounds like lugnuts rolling around in a metal drum in all but 4th gear. it gets louder the faster you go but stops as soon as I depress the clutch.

did you check the u-joints put the engine in neutral key on engine offget under the truck and grab the drive shaft and try to wiggle then and twist if you feelany slop change them out both or all while you have it out you dont want to drop a shaft while your driving down the road

The u-joints are tight, no slop. Its a really loud clunking noise. As soon as you let off the clutch. Can I drop the bottom cover and look inside for any busted up stuff?

It could be the pressure plate It sounds like you need to drop the tranny I dont believe you canlook inside it tru draining the oil and look for metal shavings It would be a good excuse to put a new clutch in it also if you do put it all new clutch flywheel pressure plate slave master throw out and flywheel bushing. Gearboxes are kinna fun to take apart rebuild it or have it rebuilt. But before you pull the tranny the front u-joint is my first suspect shoot some grease in them and see if the noise changes. Or just pull the driveline and check them closer. cheaper first is my motto it prolly wont hurt to change the oil in the rear axle and look for shaving there also that animal will show it`s ugly head one way or the other better in the shop than on the road.

Thanks for the info. I replaced the clutch last month because it was making a noise that I thought was the throwout bearing. The previous owner had put in a heavy duty clutch but didn't replace the slave or the small bearing inside the flywheel. The clutch I replaced was almost new. I should've replaced the slave and flywheel when I had it dropped.

I'm going to drop the tranny again and put the heavy duty clutch back in but this time I'm going to replace the slave and flywheel.

I don't think its the u-joints because the noise goes away when the clutch pedal is pushed in and the truck is still rolling.

its your throwout bearing. mine did the exact same thing and i brought it to a mechanic and he changed it and it stoped. he changed the clutch and everything

Yea the flywheels are not that expensive nor is the pilot bushing and you can change any leaking seals while your in there rear main and unput shaft. I have never had a hydraulic clutch but when i change wheel cylinders and calipers I will put a new master in also I see no sense in putting old oil in a new piston. With a clutch I have read the best way is to bench bleed the master first then gravity bleed the slave saves alot of headache getting the bubbles out and you have a complete new system to depend on.

I have that same noise problem and was wondering what happens if I just leave it as it is. Not too excited in dropping the trans and working on it. What you guys think?

My engine makes a sound of a tin can running around the engine when it starts up and whenever you accelerate (even in park and neutral), it is a 3-speed auto in a 2.8-6

Kip, check your timing chain, your engine oil level, and your trans fluid level.
are you hearing valve lash ?

Hasan,
Unless you fancy the idea of being suddenly stuck in one gear ( could even be reverse )
or doing major damage to the syncronizers inside the transmission forcing major repair bills or a new transmission, I would just change out the slave cylinder, master cylinder, clutch, throw out bearing and flywheel bushing now before anything really nasty happens.
