what is this noise?

Starter. It's a common 4.0 OHC problem. Sometimes it just goes away.

Hope you mean SOHC.....cuz thats what it is lol.

same thing... ohc is either going to be single or dual...

hey! i have the exact truck, mine does it too!, seems to be amplified by moisture after mudding etc..

Err, there isn't anything else I could possibly be referring to.

Clarity is all I was after, since newbs might not know the difference beteen OHV and OHC, and SOHC makes it absolutely clear that it is different from the earlier OHV.

And since this seems to be a SOHC problem...we don't want anybody running around saying "yeah I got that too on my 96 4.0L V6 OHV" when its not even applicable to them.
:icon_thumby:

Weezl, the colder the weather, the worse the noise I have found. it is 70F here now and my mother's Explorer hardly makes the noise at all when its warmer out. Its getting harder to diagnose. Dealer has said to just forget about it just like you mention....such an annoying noise though. :dunno:

Maybe the trick is to move to California :icon_rofl:

lol, yeah mine gets better with tempature, in the summer it didn't do it at all... last winter when it was like -40, it did it WAY worse, plus the oil filter bypass was screaming away! lol
