simply put, my truck has been doing this constantly... only when it's cold, and only when i start it up... what is it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUMH0HhH3qs

the dealership is dumb and won't give me an answer they more or less went "i don't know what's wrong with it... maybe alternator" and didn't care to look into it for me...

anyone, thoughts? i have no stethescope and second person, so i can't find the sound by trial and error...

could it be your starter not disengaging quick enough? i was thinking your fan or something but if its only on start up, and it sounds like its right when you stop cranking. idk just a thought

it's definitely from the front of the motor, and not muffled by a bellhousing or something like that...

you say in front of the truck ... well gosh maybe the balancing pulley(Harmonic Balancer. crankshaft pulley, Drive Belt Idler Pulley , Fan Clutch ) . I do it's nothing, must see in person, a bit far for me

i guess what i should ask, is is this a sound that other people have heard on theirs, and they fixed?

100% withou a doubt that is the starter grinding the flywheel, I'm going through the same issue. Getting it fixed this week. The starter is not disengaging and its grinding the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. Get it fixed ASAP

it's not a grinding noise in any way shape or form... it's a squeek or chirp

i do agree it's probably the starter not disengaging though, that's what i've heard a lot, and my buddy's ST had that happen a few years back, apparently...

from what im hearing could it possibly be the belt? you can grab a can of belt squeel quite (name may vary) from any auto parts store in canada its in canadian tire or walmart.

will it stay running? it keeps cutting off....sounds like starter isnt disengaging or your alternator is about to take a dump

Sounds like the starter to me too.

yeah, it stays running, but it only makes the noise when it first starts, so in the video, i start it, and shut it off again really quick, just to make the video shorter....

i originally thought it was my tensioner, but after sticking my head in the engine compartment while starting the motor a few times, and it seems it's coming from the rear of the motor, drivers side, which is where the starter is

Do the dumm thing. Take the serpentine belt off and start it. DON'T RUN THE TRUCK LONG! If the noise goes away you know it's up front. If not you know it's someplace else. Let us know what you find PLEASE.

truck won't run without the belt, it will turn over a couple times, but that's it... still makes the noise though

My mom's 99 explorer has done this from day one. We have never been able to figure it out :bawling: If we ever figure it out I'll let you know what it was.
