I know this is an easy question for most but I don't know myself, I have a 91 ranger 4x4 with 3.73's in it now, I got a new axle for the rear and it is a 4.10 and I now need to match the front. What type of pumpkin is on the front so I know how to search for a ring and pinion, help help help. And if you happen to know a good place to find gears let me know!

You likely have a D35. There is a tiny chance that it has a D35/28 hybrid pig.

Look for a 4.10 pig from a 90-97 ranger or 90-94 exploder.

If you have a D35/28 hybrid, you can tell by looking at it under the truck
and it will have a smooth case on it. The true D35 has ribs running
from the pinion to the beam.

It has a D35. Hybrid didn't appear untill 93 in 2.3 and 3.0 trucks. You will only find a factory 4.10 pig in a 90-92 2.3 ranger 4x4, otherwise if you buy gears, buy the reverse rotation Dana 35 gears, Jeep D35s are not the same, nor is the 98+ D35 IFS in rangers.

doubtful that he has a Dana 35. His truck has the 2.9, which means more than likely it has the Dana 28.

Best way to tell for sure is to post up a picture of the front axle.

It's a 91, it has a D35. D35 started in 11/89

I've never seen a hybrid in a 3.0 truck, but on the other hand every 4cyl i've looked at has had one, including mine.

He's right, the 90' model year is when the D35 came and every Ranger came with a true D35, no matter the engine.

In 93' they decided to waste money stupidly and design a special housing and inner shafts to fit the D28 Ring & Pinion, and carrier on the D-35 axle.

So is it a D35 and if so does anyone know where I can find 4:10's for it? And if anyone has any other recommendations let me know.

As I stated above, it's a D35 and...

you can also get gears on this site at TRS fab and offroad

A few 2.9L auto trucks of those years had 4.10 D35s as well.

The Hybred, which is ONLY found in 1993-97 Rangers
is identifiable in one of two ways:

1)Remove the filler plug in the front:
a)if you see the carrier it is a true D35
b)If you see the bearing cap it is a hybred.

2)Look at the bottom of the aluminum "pig" case
IF it has "ribs" it's real, the hybred is smooth.

I've seen MANY Hybreds in gen3 3.0 trucks.

as someone said above you will typically find 4.10 REAL D35 axles only
in 1990-92 2.3 manual trans trucks, but I've also found some in 1990 bronco2's
I've seen ONE in a 4.0 truck (and yes it had the correct door code)

His 1991 certainly has a "REAL" D35, because it's the only possible front
axle for 1991 or 1992
