Removing the shifter as part of the transmission removal. Diagram showed a bolt down at the base of the shifter holding it on. This turned out to be a threaded rod with a nut, which i loosened. Is there anything else holding the shifter on? It doesn't seem to want to pull off. I put a pry bar in there and was lifting the whole transmission with no progress in shifter sliding off. Is there something else holding it on, or is it just stuck?

take the nut off the side you had it on and put it on the opposite side and tighten. it will pull the pin out and you can pull the shifter up with your hands, ive pulled mine a few times. 18mm nut correct?

yeah, 18mm.
gotcha -- that makes sense. thanks a bunch for the reply!

not a prob, had to put a trans in my truck b4 i could drive it when i bought it about a yr ago, i feel your pain. while your at it if its the mazda m50d trans the rubber shift rail plugs behind the shifter, go ahead and pull them out with some pliers and silicone them in. this keeps them from leaking as this low fluid from those plugs leaking is the main killer of those transmissions. i took my top cap off and threaded the holes 3/8 npt and put pipe plugs in them with teflon tape.
