What a4ld transmissions, from what vehicles and years will bolt up to an 87 Ranger STX 2.9 2 wheel drive.
Also is there a difference between the 4.0 and 2.9 transmissions, is one better, stronger than the other?

I lost my OD about 50 mi. south of Lexington Ky. and made it home to Detroit in drive at 50/55 mph. All other gears still work great, what do you think, rebuild or replace? Any and all info will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a Million,
George.

The 4.0 version of the A4 is a heavier version for sure. The 4.0 should bolt up to the 2.9 engine with no problems. I'm not 100% but I think the flexplate from the 2.9 will work. Here is a great site to visit for parts and info:http://www.transmissioncenter.org/a4ld.htm
Get the upgraded Sonnax crank spacer and the later model flexplate that doesn't have the spotweld marks around the crank bolt area. They are stronger and will help with the centering of the torque converter alighnment problem so common with these trannys.
Any 4.0 equiped 4x2 Ranger or Explorerr would be a good place to find one. Also remember to totally flush the tranny cooler lines and cooler itself BEFORE installing your new tranny. Any residue of metal from the old tranny will take out the new one in short order. remember that those shavings flow in the oil and most certainly be in the cooler and lines.

How about this?

Will a a4ld from a Thunderbird turbo 2.3 fit in the Ranger with a 2.9?
Need to know asap as I found one on Craigslist and need to move on it fast!
Thanks Ahead,
George.

Hello

Try to find 90-94 4.0l A4LD. I have one behind my 2.8l and i think it will out last my B2 now. The one that was behind the 2.8l blew up real good. found parts in the bottom of the pan. You can use one from an Areostar but will meed to modify the shift linkage.
