So I just got my new 94 ranger 2 weeks ago. It has a Dana 35 Hybrid axle:bawling:, and the auto locking hubs no longer work. I want to go to Warn manual locking hubs:icon_thumby:, but Im not sure what ones I need. I have been told by a few people that I need Dana 28 hubs but then people have told me that I need Dana 35 hubs:icon_confused:. If someone could clear this up for me it would be great. Thanks.

The hybrid axle is called a hybrid because it appears all the same as the dana 35. The differences are internal, meaning the ring and pinion are different, the axleshafts will be the dana 35.

Someone will pop in here soon and correct me if I am wrong...

Or you could check the tech library.

the outer axle shafts are the same as the D35, the inner shafts are necked down into the pumpkin. so yes, D35 hubs...

so they are dana 35 on the outside but taper to a 28 on the inside. that is the stupidest design. what will honestly make a difference. ford was not thinking in that moment...........

they were probly using up parts they still had before going to the full-D35. its been said that the hybrid is better than the D28 though.

Thanks alot for all the info guys. I thought I needed the dana 35 hubs but then i had people telling me i was wrong so thoiught i would check. Also I know the dana 28 can only handle 31s but ive heard the hybrid is a little stronger then the dana 28. Can a hybrid hold up with 33s, its mainly used as my DD and i go out wheeling on the weekends(trail, mud). Nothing crazy.

if you're not flogging it with the tires turned, I imagine it'd hold fine under normal use... I've beat on my D28 with 31s and haven't broken anything yet... have a D35 and explorer 8.8 on hand though...

so i just found a 91 explorer about 30min from me and the guy only wants $400 for it. would i be better off to save my money and get the explorer and swap in the axle, because i would also like to upgrade to an 8.8. It also has a 4.0L that i would like to drop in eventually.

Only you can make that decision...but if your only looking for a set of hubs...the explorer won't help.

I am really only looking for hubs but i would like to run 35s some day, i think i would be better off to get the explorer now and just swap in the "real" dana 35, plus i would have the 8.8 with better options for a rear locker.

all you really need to convert it to a real D35 is the pumpkin, and the axle shafts that go into the diff, that'll keep you from having to get an alignment...

Considering that THE issue with the D28 was the dinky U-joints and yokes
AND that the D35 uses the same U-joints and Yoke ears as a D44... yeah the "hybred" is better than a D28.

If you don't have a 4.0 (or a V8) you don't really need a real D35, because the 2.3 and 3.0 engine doesn't generate enough torque with any available gears to break them unless you really bash stuff senselessly...
