i just got done putting my '91 4.0 4x4 ranger back together after dropping the t-case and auto trans. so i could replace the oil pan gasket. well when i was installing the trans. i was having trouble getting it to push up to the engine all the way. it was aligned correctly but it just didn't want to push up. at the time i thought it was just the alignment pins causing this. i used the bolts and it seemed to pull up fine. well after i got it all back together and fluids filled, it will not move the truck. i can put it in any gear and the truck will not move. now in hind sight i imagine that whatever was causing it not to want to push up is the cause of my issue but i am not sure what that is. any ideas?

Flex plate bolts line up? or your torque converter wasn't seated all the way into the pump on the trans and in forcing it it took it out? Either way bad news.

flexplate bolts lined up. on my old rock buggy i have a vortec 350 and th400 trans. the bell housing had the removable bottom so i could seat the torque converter, install tranny, then slide the converter out and then bolt it to the flex plate. as you know the setup on this tranny will not allow this. the converter has to be already bolted up to the flexplate. any tricks to getting it all lined up correctly? do you think i have damaged the pump if it wasn't aligned properly and it is now bolted up tight to the motor? thanks for all the help.

you might have. you shouldn't leave the converter bolted to the flex plate. it is next to impossible to line up that way. make sure the converter is seated all the way and line it up. if it goes right together it is right. reach in the hole for the starter and pull the converter forward and bolt it up.

Guaranteed, you F***ed the pump gears. No doubt about it.

AS for the A4LD you have to place the converter on to the trans. This trans is not like other auto trans. When placing the converter on you must push it in and rotate it so hear and feel for 2 clicks. This will let you know that the converter is properly engaged to the pump. With the converter and trans together it is then lifted and bolted to the flexplate which is already bolted to the crankshaft. By doing it the way you did, the converter is either not engaged to the pump or the pump has been damaged.
This is what the previous owners of my Bronco II did. If you don't believe me googgle it.

thanks for all of the replies. looks like i'll be dropping the trans. again. i didn't think of using the starter hole to pull the converter forward.

also is there any way that it can be all bolted together like it is now and have the pump not engaged an not damaged? how can i inspect the pump for damage? i am asking because as much of a pain as it is to drop the trans. in this thing i don't want to drop it, realign it, reinstall it, only to find that it still does not work.

Their is no way around this. You will still have to drop the trans and check the pump gears. You will also need a tool to center the pump when you put it back together. And since you have it apart you might as well change the seal on the housing.

i just thought i'd check back in to say thanks to everyone who help me with this. i pulled the trans. back out and removed the pump to find i had in fact broken the pump gear. the converter snout was a little boogered up too but i spent some time on it and got it all cleaned back up. anyway i got it all back together and it is working fine now. thanks again.

You probably know this now, but for anyone else who may search this thread. Never Ever ever use the bolts to pull a transmission to its mating engine. When installed correctly, it will slide right up to the engine block on its own.
