what hardware?

does anybody know of any good source to tell what size hardware is to be used where? (other than asking AllanD) theres been times i wanted to buy replacements when i dont have the actual hardware available. for example, what dia/pitch are the nuts for the engine mounts? what dia/pitch/length is the hardware that holds an fm145 to the engine? thats all i can think of right now that i need to know but im sure theres one more....
 
Most of the bolts that the Ranger used are special made fasteners, Aftermarket replacements in the same thread are completely different.
A microfiche might show the right sizes, Is there such a thing out there for a Ranger?
The next thing would be to go out and buy a large tap and die set, then learn the sizes for yourself.
The motor mount nut is 12x1.75. The bellhousing bolts are 10x1.50, the lengths vary depending on the trans and location.
 
well i suppose thats a start....if i have the hardware i can find the right replacement (mic and thread pitch gauge) but if i dont physically have the hardware i need, i have to look elsewhere. thanks
 
Finding the proper size is pretty easy once you are used to them. You need a metric tape measure to measure the length.
Perhaps you should put together a list and sell it to those in need. There are a lot of different bolts in just one year of Ranger. Almost every year has variations.

The UPPER stud for the coil spring nut is 5/8-11 thread (US coarse)
The lower END of that stud can be EITHER 5/8-11(early)
Or 3/4-10 (US Coarse) where it threads into the beam.

Dana28 axles can be EITHER thread, I'm not sure when they switched.
Dana35 axles are ALWAYS 3/4-10.

well first, thanks to both of you. second, how the hell do you know this stuff? i want to be able to look the stuff up, not have to ask you guys...
 
just a thought i found that it was easier to go the local auto parts store, buy the repair book on ur year model truck and should tell everything u need to know.
 
The heads are metric sized though. A 28mm socket fits right and a 1 1/8" is very sloppy. But I clean the threads on the beam and bolts with my 3/4" NC 10 SAE tap & die as Allan stated.
 
And you should know that automotive hardware is different than hardware store stuff. You likely won't find what you need when you lose a bolt. It's common to have a flange under the head for bearing surface, but the head to be reduced for tools to fit--and no threads where they aren't needed. And weird sizes as well.
