what happened to my shifter?

Trany won't shift in the right spot any more. The knob of the shifter is way over to the left and in first gear it hits the dash? I'm in the process of bleeding the master cylinder for the clutch. I don't think that has anything to do with it. I almost have it completely bled but ran out of brake fluid. I will go in to gear again but It won't go into first because it hits the dash first. I read somewhere that there is a kit to replace in the top of the trany but don't remember where. may have been on the explorer forum but may have been here. I glanced over it didn't think I was going to need it, so didn't give it another thought? who knew? any ideas or what it is I'm searching for?

most likely the plastic bushings in the shifter broke.

it's probably not a disaster,but I can't talk you through it right now, I'm on a laptop with a dying battery

Thank you for the answer. I think I found it in the library. It was kinda weird that it went from a little sloppy to crazy sloppy in a 2 day period, I was putting in the clutch. I was hoping I didn't do anything real bad to it. I am trying to get the parts, may have to ask some stupid questions when I get started on it. I still need to bleed the clutch. I was wondering if taking it off is easy? I think I just remove two bolts an lean it forward in the engine compartment then push with my hand on the shaft, to pump it? Then it will be okay? I am thinking thats what I read.

If infact your shifter bushings dismantled, change your transmission fluid without a doubt. Those little particles that fell inside can get into places and block fluid flow, causing a catastrophic failure.

For bleeding your clutch, search the forums for "fastpakr". He's explained a million times the procedure to do so. It works well.

I'm no mechanic, so bear with me. I am thinking it is saying to bleed the master I need to unbolt it spin it upside down bolt it back then pump it? I was also wandering what size of clear tubing will work?
I also read just to hook up clear line back into reservior and pump it alot, until no bubbles. no need to unbolt anything? I was wondering about some clearity.Thank you for answers allready. I ordered the parts from ebay for the shifter bushings.about 26.00
