I have an 87 ranger and it's been under the knife for quite some time now. Anyways, its almost done and road legal, my question is about the exhaust. I want to run a side exit exhaust that ends before the rear tire. Is that legal or no? BTW, i live in OH so if anyone knows chime in.

thats very legal...hell I had a muffler meant for a FWD car coming out in front of the tire of my longbed, and I live in the same county as you. Before I had it it had a 3" glasspack exiting the same spot, and passed e-check fine. Really as long as you have it "exiting the outside of the vehicle" its "legal", so in other words, you could dump it under the truck, and just use a piece of flexpipe to make it exit the vehicle when you have to get it echecked, seen it done before.

Also: if you go to the e-check in Spencer they don't care much.

It's only as legal as the cops or inspectors think it is. The law technically is it must exit behind or above the passenger compartment, mine exits 4" after the door and it still technically in the middle of the passenger compartment since I drive a B2 but it's behind any openable window, it's loud as hell when there was no cat for over a year and have not been bothered once by the police and when I put a cat on for emissions, it's passed both times and the inspectors never said anything.
Here's mine, I actually notched the the body for it, the last 12" of the exhaust is 3" just for looks. Since you have a body lift, run it between the frame and body like I did, it keeps it very well protected off road and looks better than going under the frame.

Here's more detailed pics, this was before I notched the body.

hahnsb2, doesn't that get hot on the floor with it that close? I would put a heat shield if it was that close to the floor. It looks good, though.

its his instant heater for them cold washingtown winters

It doesn't make a bit of difference heat wise.

from what i remember, it has to exit behind the drivers door

It will most likely depend on the state DMV. I know here in PA it must exit past the body and have a muffler of sorts; side exhaust is legal in all 50 states. It was factory on the 97 F-150. I got pulled over before (for no reason just an a$$hole state trooper) and he tried to run my truck though the ringer. When he got to the exhaust he was complaining about noise and such and location but I asked if it was legal and is answer was yes.

I had my truck e-checked in spencer last august, they seemed pretty cool about everything.

Thats the same setup i want to run, like you said it will be well protected, i was going to cut a 3 1/2 inch hole in the rocker before the bed and run it out that way. Will i have any problems with heat there? Also, do you only have 1 cat on yours? i know the 2.9s came with 2 i was just wondering if it helps much.

I have a single aftermarket cat on it right now, I ran no cat for a year but I had to pass emissions. It wont help power wise but it sounds better/louder with the single cat.

What kind of cat did you get? Also do you have a y-pipe or an h-pipe?

Just the one at the local auto parts store, the brand is Maremont, it pulled slightly better emissions numbers than my dads B2 with both stock cats (one of his was new), when I originally got it the previous owner ovaled a piece of 2 1/2" pipe and and welded it to the original cat flange and added an aftermarket cat (which I accidentally ruined a while ago while doing exhaust work) so it was easy for me to add the aftermarket cat.

Do you have any pictures of how that flange to the cat is setup?

Hello

Check with your local state/province dmv. In Alberta for example you don't need cats on your car. But in Ontario you do. My T-Bird and B2 don't have any emmisions on it any more and they can't do anything about it yet.
