If the dealer can find the parents an Edge they are going to clunkerize the '94 Explorer. The time frame from go to no go will probably be tight so I can't really do anything huge (like the entire drivetrain) I have to wait until they give the ok before I go to work, because since Edges are getting hard to find and the Ex will really only be worth scrap when I get done with my plans if they don't find an Edge. It has to be able to drive itself across town to the dealership (2 miles) when I am done.

On the list:

For sure stuff:
1. Rims and tires - I have a couple of rims that I could stand to get rid of, and I get the deer hoofprint alloys with decent Firestone Destination LE's and a spare.
2. Front seats and console - I am have been getting tired of tripping over my original bench seat in the garage with two broken springs anyway.
3. Newer Warn Hubs - replace with cut off pop cans
4. Radio plug in - my truck has no plug in, which means everytime I change my radio the wires get a little shorter...
5. Front driveshaft.

Depending on timeline given and leftover time from the first round of gotta haves:
1. The fairly new Radiator - Swap with the old one I stashed away for V-8 mockup with a seapy tank
2. Newer fan - Fan from parts truck (non A/C and smaller)
3. The receiver - was on when we got it so it will probably be a pain to get off. It would be a nice starting point for a winch mount on a trailer...
4. Front axle shafts.

Checking compatability in HVAC forum:
4. Condenser
5. Compressor

The front D35 has 3.27 gears and needs ball joints yesterday... I think it would actually be cheaper to wait for one with lower miles and 3.73 gears to match my truck. It has been a back up vehicle so the ball joints really haven't been an issue. It has also had a nasty habit of eating front brake pads from day one that I don't want any part of. I already have a 8.8 and don't need another sitting around with 3.27's.

Trust me, I do not like them doing this to "The Mothership" and have rallied against the idea from the begining, but I can see their point that it is worth 3.5 times more this way that it could ever be as one piece. One reason they didn't sell it when they got the '02 was they didn't want to watch some kid beat the tar out of it for a year or two until it finally died before going to the crusher. With 170k miles and some moderate rust that is about the only other fate it has. At least this way parts of of our full time family car from 1996 to 2005 can live on in my baby and it gets put down quick.

What else is worth grabbing in a hurry that I haven't thought of? :icon_confused:

Do you have a sunroof? If so, do you have the cover that clips onto the sunroof? Even if you don't want it for yourself, they're worth something on eBay. Everyone who has an old Explorer has lost theirs already (except me :D) and it's a pretty in-demand item.

No sunroof on the ol' Explorer.

Pull the front shafts and replace the pumpkin?

I'd strip everything it didn't absolutely need to run/be turned in. It should make it there on just a battery right? lol

I would love to strip it and send it down there with my 2.8 in it, D-28 up front and a 7.5 in the rear... but I don't think I would have enough time to get it all done. I can't really start before they find something to trade it in for, and then I will probably only have a weekend to work it over. Aside from the miles and a little rust, it isn't in terrible condition as it is... and me jumping the gun and gutting it now would really lower its value if the dealer can't turn up a AWD Edge that they like.

Plus, if it isn't getting crushed, I don't really want to be the one to kill it...

Looks like about everything I'd take off it.

If you're ever up this way, I have a D35 with 3.73s for you.

Cool, we just went to Rapid City last Labor Day on vacation so I probably won't be heading back up that way for awhile though.

Let me know if you happen to wander down here and have the potential to drag it along. :icon_idea:

im doing the same thing my grandma is trading her 96 explorer that is rotted beyond repair for a new escape but i think im just going to take the tires she just got new ones put on they are also firestone destinations on some odd ninja star looking rim i think i might go down to a u pull it and get some spare rims and tires to put on there so i have another set of tires since i also got a new set awhile back

At least pull the axle shafts out of the front, it's a pretty quick job.
