to all current and former marines i would like to wish you all a very happy and safe marine corps birthday.:birthday::beer::beer::beer:

november 10th means the day after my birthday lol... all of my cake is gone.

Ten years--1986-1996. Seven in field artillery and 3 on embassy duty. I'm glad you reminded me--I forgot. Of course both my wife and I forgot our anniversary this year too. That was a quiet moment as we decided who to blame. I usually wear my e-uniform on this day to celebrate so I'll put it on.

happy birthday to all us marines worldwide past and present!

This is also a sad anniversary, the Edmund Fitzgerald ( a Great Lakes iron ore ship ) went down with all hands in 1975 on this day. A mystery, the loss with all hands (29) inspired stories and songs. Canadian songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's " Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald".

I'm glad you reminded me--I forgot.

:icon_surprised: :buttkick: :nono: how do you forget after 3 months of pounding it in your head and 10 or 11 birthday balls? just kidding things go so fast these days. i already have it on the schedule to be off next time it is on a week day.

I can't remember all the Birthdays, and certainly most of the time there is no birthday ball in the FMF. But here are the notable ones.

1987--we are in Korea for Bearhunt, lost like bastards on Father's Day. We make it out of the field at the end of the week after all the other units are long secured for the night. They held the chow tent open for us. It was all-you-can-eat lobster tails and steak.

1994--I'm at the embassy in Freetown Sierra Leone in a 5-man detachment. We rented the roof of the only hotel in the city. Five sets of dress blues, probably 500 other people. We sell tickets and t-shirts all year to raise money, have Star Beer delivered by the Bedford lorry load. We spend about ten grand on that--and that's a lot of money in the poorest country in the world. By far the best MC Bday event I've ever experienced.

1995--This time in Paris France in a 30 man detachment. Same kind of thing but we have to behave because it's a huge event in the diplomatic community. The only troublemaker at the ball was some American contractor that was a Vietnam vet and decided we were all a bunch of pussies. We discreetly bounced him. But the ball sucked with the thousand dignataries you are abliged to invite in a place like that.

1996, last one. I was married. It was at the SNCO club. Nobody really cared.

My funnest events have been Mess Nights. I've organized about 3 of them I guess. The first one my First Segeant said "Corporal Wills, we're going to have a mess night. You're Mr. Vice (I was new to the unit and sort of floating without a job) here's the date. Get it done." I had done a mess night at the end of NCO School so I had an idea of how it was supposed to go. I spent a month organizing and it went off great. I did another one in the same unit about a year later--I was Mr. Vice again because I had been good at it--and was a newly promoted Sergeant so that gave him an excuse to use me, and then I did one in Paris too just to give all those young guys the experience--nobody goes back to the fleet after MSG duty. Those are damn fun.
