Looking at possibly picking up a '96 X for it's 302 and everything needed to swap into my X.

Question being...what do you think it's worth with 186,000 miles and being a roll-over?

The guy is asking $1000. But the guy that referred me to this said that he's looking to ditch it 'cause he doesn't want/need it anymore.

From what I'm told, it's a turn-key operation. Everything works, but the body is in rough shape in a few spots because of the rollover.

i think it depends on if it's worth a grand to you for the swap or not..
what are you looking to gain from the 5.0?? power? economy? have you looked at the numbers? is it really worth it?

i think a grand can give you a lot of upgrades and you already have a 4.0... if you want the 5.0 then go for it! i'm not saying that..

that's about the usual price for what i've seen around here.. i looked into when i was gonna do the swap on my b2, then decided a 4.0 was better for me.

i'd go offer him 800 see what happens lol

The caution I have for doing such a swap is that the '96 Explorer probably has an AWD transfercase, not a 2 speed selectable like you are probably accustomed to. Some will tell you it definitely has an AWD tcase, but I have seen with my own eyes a couple of stock Explorers/Mountaineers with V8s from 96-01 that had a slectable knob on the dash, so there are a few out there. One of them was an 01 Mountaineer.

You can swap in a tcase from an F150 or other fullsize rig to replace the AWD tcase but you may also need to swap in driveshafts to match, I've heard they are different length (haven't experienced myself, just what I've read on the internet).

Other than the Tcase, I think everything would work out ok. The price is ok, maybe you could talk him down a bit. And you could always sell leftover parts to make up the cost. Seats, axles, wheels, etc. should make back most of your money.

4.0B2,

You'd have to go read the "Pix as promised" thread I started to understand why. It's the timing chain tensioners that have me irritated right now but, like i said in that thread, I'll probably end up driving it into the ground...then worrying about it. lol

oh okay.. so its a mechanical fix! got it.. i understand now.
might as well spontaneous upgrade instead of just fix.

Yeah, the guy told me it's AWD, but I was planning on ditching that from the start. Would a BW1354 hold up to that? I'm guessing no, but i've been surprised here before.

Good idea to ditch the AWD tcase, it really makes it suck fuel. People have reported gains of +2mpg by getting rid of the AWD for a real Tcase that allows RWD only mode.

I think the BW1354 would hold up to mild abuse. But, it requires an adapter to make it work with the transmission that you would be putting in front of it, the V8 Ex has a different transmission than your 4.0 Explorer. And, I don't even know if adapters are still made/sold to match up the V8 tranny to V6 Tcase.
