I was worried if I buy a cheapo it my not give out all codes or something or be as helpfull. I've been shopping around for a obd2 scanner and I think I found one. It's called scanguage2 goes for about $200 CAN. It claims to give out hp under load so I'm assuming this thing must be pretty good.
Not sure though if the hp guage will work with my 96 though.
this is the link, lot of them selling on EBAY

if all your needing is to pull codes, ive had good results from the cheap code reader from harbor freight. it was only $45.

I've had great luck with mine. A scanguageII is more of a mpg helper though than a code reader. Think of the code reading as a bonus feature. It's mostly meant to give you diagnostics on your car so you can learn how different types of driving affect your mpg, and thus learn how to maximize your mpg. Ask about them over at ecomodder.com you can find a LOT more info there as half the members own one. They used to have a scangauge group buy going on there, where you could get one shipped for $150 USD. I'm not sure if that included Canada, plus the prices have come down along with gas prices so if you shop around you can probably find a better deal than that now-a-days.

As for the code reading, you can scan the truck with it, it gives you the codes one by one, you can clear them, leave them...blah blah blah...very basic but it gets the job done.

Edit: I remember right, the guy that invented it owned an f150 :)

I like mine. I leave it connected all the time, so I can read codes as I drive if my CEL pops on. All it does is display a code, like P1443 for example. It doesn't do any diagnostic testing.

It has some standard gauges built in and programmable gauges that you can enter.

I don't believe the accuracy of the HP gauge.

The transmission temp gauge works on very few trucks before ~2000 or so.

You can have 4 gauges displayed at once. In my Ranger I have instant mpg, intake air temp, coolant temp, and voltage. (These gauges are much more accurate than stock gauges)

In my Explorer I used instant mpg, transmission slip, torque into transmission, and voltage.

I was assuming this would be more helpfull then a regular scanner

Since it had all the extra guages. I don't understand diagnostic testing, I thought it was just a matter of getting codes. If anyone can shed some light on that I would apreciate it.
I'm sort of just jumping into this cause it seems like a cool hobby. I guess I'll have to go to the library and do more research before buying, I think I need to figure out what exactly diagnostic testing is and if I should invest in a scanner with this feature aswell.

All the Scan Gauge will do is read codes. I think the nicer (and expensive) scanners can actually test sensors and stuff on your engine.
