What did YOU do today?

More work on the shop….

Today I forgot to put coffee in the machine before turning it on.The first time the coffee looked a little weak, perhaps time to clean the machine. On the second try I forgot to put the pot under the drip... but at least caught that lapse before walking away and coming back to a mess.
You are not alone. No, seriously, look out behind you!

Parts came in for the truck yesterday. went with a bosch starter, thought it was a german company but once again-“made in china”. Got it , new cables & a solenoid on it today & it fired right up. Had to jack up the left front corner to be able to get under it. Starter seemed quite heavy for its size. Looked like all the parts were original, starts really quickly now. Never thought it started bad before but it really hops off now. Drove it to my parents house since I didn’t have a chance to last weekend. Topped off the tank to check the milage, was impressed with it. 17 mpg out of a 4420# full size 1/2 ton. not bad at all.

Random day... went to a local swap meet (you've heard enough stories about me...) and was fairly controlled, just got a couple things until the end when I found a great deal on a Husky chainsaw... I think it's a 257 model with a 24" bar... couldn't pass it up for $100 since I have a need...

Then went to an estate sale and spent some more but got some good stuff, mostly consumables like spray paint, solvent and bar oil...

Once home I mowed some, cleaned the shop some, burned weeds in the shop driveway then just got in from moving some dirt.

Got the pool project finished, supposed to be in the ‘90’s this week so I might actually use it. The umbrella I got for free, guy at work scraps and this was in his truck along with the broken table it went with. zip-tied a pvc tube into the corner & its all good.

Fairly productive day... Went over to my moms to hang out for a bit, then went to Harbor Freight, when I got home I remembered what I was going to get there on their current sale so I went back (annoyingly a 15 minute each way drive), I wanted casters for my welding table so it's less annoying... Their threaded stud caster selection is lacking so I will have to make adapters from 1/2-20 to 10mm coarse... no biggie, I have a plan. Around then I realized my welding cart arrived so I started assembling that. Once that was together I realized it was NOT designed around a 300cf tank :), it could be worse though, it will take at least 15 pounds of upward force to get it tippy and will get better the more stuff I put on the cart...

Somewhere in the middle of that I raked some dirt in the yard to flatten an area out, there's a LOT of sand in the dirt so we'll see how that works later...

So far tonight I made some 5mm nuts out of some #8 nuts for a stroller for the wife's work, they lost a nyloc nut and I don't have jack for 5mm nuts so made 2 to jam together...

Then I cleared off my Titanium welding table, then I converted my MIG welder back to a MIG from TIG configuration for probably the last time... I made some adapters for the stud type casters I got yesterday for the welding table, welded 1/2-20 nuts to 10mm bolts, they're cooling off now. Next step is to see if I can find some spacers or something (just realized I do have like 1000 1/2" washers...) to take up the extra gap in the 1/2" threads just because I can see that being a weak spot...

I picked up nails and small pieces of trash after my roof was replaced. This is not to bash the roofers. They did a good job cleaning up after themselves. But when there are thousands of nails being removed and installed, not to mention all the bits an pieces that result when removing the old shingles. There is going to be missed stuff. I'm sure I didn't get everything. I just got the number closer to zero. After I cut the grass, I'll do another sweep with the strong magnet and see what else I pick up with it. The number still won't be zero, just closer to that number.

I took Mrs. Truck, my sister and her boyfriend, and our family friend Ms. B out to the municipal park last night to see the fireworks. I have never had to look away from a fireworks display before, but it got so bright on the ground that it looked like somebody was welding 200 feet in the air.

Much freedom.

Well, yesterday I set out to get the roof panels for my shop. The correct ones this time. Mind you it’s been 94-ish with 80% humidity lately. I was not feeling good trying to drive the F-150 with the windows open so I turned on the AC. Well, when I shut it down after letting it idle for a minute at the steel shop, it didn’t want to restart. It was acting like I overheated it.

Finally got it to fire and it sounded like it was only running on 4-5 cylinders for a hot minute. I limped it to Lisa’s since I was close, let it idle for awhile and hoped that letting it sit overnight would help. We went out for salads and beer, lol. Truck fired up like a champ this morning but I think this might be the last long trip for it after this. I checked things over with my temp gun after I got home (refused to turn the AC on) and everything looks right other than it running a little on the warm side, but the rad, thermostat and water pump all appear to be working because of the temp changes so I dunno.

Need to get the shop done and get my green Ranger fixed so I can get back to getting the dump truck going. Get back to a couple solid trucks.

Vapor lock because of the heat?

When I got home I decided to get to doing stuff (we're not in the heat wave fortunately), did some weedeating around the pump house, trimmed my seedless grape plant, got a hitch in the F350 so I can add a trailer to tomorrows firewood trip... then decided to trim the bottom of the redwood trees so I can start mowing around them to try to ward off the ivy that is taking residence... still have some cleanup and stuff to do not to mention gathering up all of the ivy I can get... My fire pit is going to be VERY full by the time fire season comes along in October...

explored a coke transfer station that got shut down 2years ago. all of the actual
plant is gone but the maintenance buildings were still up. theres a bunch of 500lb electric motors laying around and racks full of hardware, belts, oil filters and all sorts of miscilanious(sp?) crap

saw 2inch thick pieces of chopped
copper wire sticking out of random utility holes in the floor, wow, tweeekers mustve made out goooood

Finally tested out my new TIG welder tonight along with my new welding helmet, both work great! Took a bit to get used to the welder, first attempts while playing with settings somehow I ended up on on AC while on steel and that did not work but then I saw what happened and while on DC it worked great, then tried aluminum and that is no where near as intimidating as I imagined, turns out with a non square wave (it's escaping me) it welded like a dream, square welded pretty good too, will involve more experimentation before I get too deep, I didn't get filler metal involved yet...
