What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

So yesterday we got done with work early so I decided to address my 4x4 issue in the 92. First order of business was a quick and dirty patch job to the extended cab. Took a piece of thin scrap aluminum I had, made a bunch of TLAR (That Looks About Right) cuts and bends, pop riveted it on, sealed all of the edges with foil tape and despite being way cold, squirted some red paint on it.

Then I moved into the cab to address the module... pulled the connectors, hit the test switch multiple times, well, sometimes it would click once and a slight flash on the LED, sometimes nothing and only once did it click a bunch and flash a couple times. Might try opening it up and see if there’s any chance of rehab for it. Went looking to see if I could find one of the spares (I had either one or two). No luck in the one parts pile and no luck in the lower level of my shed. Climbed up into the loft and was debating where to try digging when I realized I was looking at what appeared to be the back of a module in front of me. Flipped it over and yup. Really expected it not to work because it’s never that easy for me, but I put it in and it clicks like it should. Going to try and come up with a spare or two though plus other parts. Really would rather have the lever through the floor. Maybe someday.

I slotted an idler pulley bracket I added and adjusted it so I could drive my truck (easily until I get a chip made) without burning the belt off. I guess it's the price I pay for adding a supercharger to a 4.0 OHV, haha

Used the tailgate for a workbench, doing the 345,000 mile oil change on my Mazda 3. And I used a motorcraft filter! 910s

Lawyers were a blast, ate the whole day. Rather have Jim’s fire ants in my jock. Movie at home with the Redhead, & no, I smartened up and didn’t drive the 87.

I did take a few minutes and ordered custom seat covers for the 87 & 97, both in keeping with the planned paint roll on.

Test drive 87 tomorrow for sure!!!

I love lawyers! You give them lots of money, and then they tell you you're screwed anyway! Good folks.

Ever notice lawyers are like the only people that take your money no matter what? Generally you give someone money for a service or product and if said service or product fails, you get your money back. If I order a sandwich at a fancy restaurant and its just a dolls head between two carpet samples, I don't pay for that sandwich. But with lawyers you eat that sandwich, pay for it, leave a tip and say thank you! (y)

Changed the oil and filter. Had enough of a dry patch in the driveway with no snow and ice to put the ramps and used 4wd. 400 miles early but next weekend the temps are supposed to be around zero.
Pennzoil Platinum High Mileage 5w-30 and Motorcraft filter. Almost 210,000 miles and no timing chain noise yet. Change oil every 5000 miles. Time for a fuel filter and spark plugs but those can wait a month until it warms up.

Put belt on, radiator in, ricks ranger crossmember in, it fit the t5 better than a modded stocker. had to trim a little from top of fan shroud before installing. Need a throttle body gasket, headed to parts store after some porkchops n rice

The last step with the 87 was having a tire from the shed of miracles remounted on a wheel that matched the 87, and then putting it up in the pull apart spare tire carrier I had installed. Well, Murphy lives strong in my domain, and I finally got it up after I tapped the hold-down hole, and I ran a chase over the bolt.

But the Lord was looking out for me, on a complete whim, I had bought a metric tap and die set a few weeks ago without any real need.

Then (drum roll) I actually dropped the 87 4wd on the ground and started the second maiden voyage. If you remember, when I brought it back from the shade tree who changed the motor, I lost the brakes and had a hole in the radiator.

Tremendous success this time!!!

Doesn’t she look sweet? Gosh it was a dream! I went nine whole miles before it caught on fire!

So here’s the details. I did have a checklist that I worked through, but didn’t look at it one last time. Well, the Lord was looking out for me because when I reached the top of the driveway I had the inspiration that I should probably actually tighten up all the lug nuts. Out came the torque wrench and I did check the list, and I was off on a tremendous adventure.

It started out great, the truck handled great, the new engine purred like a kitten. The only difficulty I had is I’m a big guy and someone put in some seats from wherever, and the steering wheel was almost rubbing my tummy. No worries, I’m swapping in the 93 seats. But I was still so excited I charged on.

I picked up my mail at the UPS store a couple miles away, and then I got adventurous and decided to do a loop on surface streets that would end with some interstate miles.

As I progressed, I started to get concerned, because it seemed to be losing power. Many dark thoughts of a bad rebuilt engine ran through my noggin. But again, the Lord was looking out for me, there was nothing at all wrong with the engine, it was just the right front caliper had locked up and the wheel was just on fire. Whew. Gosh, You can imagine my relief! Engine ok, the truck was just on fire.

Well, I’m in Atlanta, so I put the fire out with some Coca-Cola. I waited a little while, and then I nursed it home, where I hosed the Coca-Cola off.

Then I ordered new calipers, rotors, front hoses, etc. The adventure continues....

And, of course, after reflection, the good Lord really was looking out for me. Can you imagine if I drove the 87 to the Redhead’s house and it caught on fire there? (I’m going to go to church twice tomorrow!!!)

I put a board between the seatbelt bracket on the floor and the flappy cab side so the door sort of holds itself closed. It's much warmer with the door closed....if I put something where the window was in the back I bet it would almost be tolerable in there at 70 mph.
