What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

I bit the bullet and ordered a new heater core from rock auto, wasnt a motorcraft but did have a motorcraft sticker on the bottom of it, also came with foam tape to wrap around the outside of the core. The one I took out (that was only 3 years old but showed a thermal difference of 30 degrees between inlet & outlet) had no foam around it, I dont recall about the one before I took out. took it out on a 10 mile test lap and it seems to work better, still dont need to turn it off high but its a improvement. 20 degrees out and about a inch of snow out there.

you WANT to see a temperature drop of about 30 degrees across any heat exchanger... my guess is the lack of foam was letting the air bypass the core... my '90 will cook you out set on floor defrost at full heat and the fan maybe one or two ticks up when it's cold enough outside to freeze an open beer...

I was thinking the lack of foam could be the issue, in about a month I shouldn’t need the heater for another 8 months. My ‘88 2.3 supercab would run you out, this reg cab has never been half that good with heater output. But the escape also spoils me on the weekends, I think you could bake a potato in foil on the defroster vents. Regardless Ive done all I can do for this situation now, it is what it is.

Have you ever replaced the water pump?

My '92 f150 always had Luke warm at best coming from the heater. I rebuild the cooling system, replaced everything, radiator, hoses, water pump, ect, except the heater core. The heat was blasting that next winter, I think thr water pump was worn and didn't have much flow.

Got new injectors and coils in. Still running like dookie. Seems to be backfiring through intake when I press accelerator. 98 5.0 in 99 ranger. Ran well for a while. Thought the problem was my cheap injectors or coil failure. Can i get some suggestions please?

yep, about 3 years ago it got a new water pump when I replaced the head, at that time it got a heater core, thermostat & new thermostat housing as well as a timing belt and a set of fuel injectors from a 302. (ok, technically HALF a set. lol) the radiator was new when I got it and I run it with half the radiator blocked off in the winter with no fan on the fan clutch, foam pipe insulation “noodles “ over the heater hoses. Ive considered mounting a ball valve in the middle of the upper radiator hose, have it 1/2 shut off in winter. Id want a mechanical temperature guage on it first though. (then I might try & rig a old choke cable to it so I could control the restriction from the cab) The oddest thing is my ‘88 2wd supercab with a 2.3 and a great heater always airlocked when I did any cooling system work, this engine has never had that problem.

Timing. Your intake valve is open when the spark plug fires.

If it's a fully equipped '98 explorer engine with fuel system and everything there's no distributor, but the timing could still be off if the cam sensor is out of place... unfortunately I don't know how to align them... I know the V8 Explorers run like junk when the cam sensor isn't working... turns out the O2 sensor heater circuit is shared with the cam sensor power... but with that I didn't have backfires just no power and it msifired and the trans didn't shift right (that power also goes to the trans shift solenoids...). If there's a vacuum leak they don't like that either, but with just one of the two PCV hoses off my '00 sploder it wouldn't even idle so it's likely not that...

This certainly could be. I’m in the process of swapping a 98 into my Ranger. Ran Good before I pulled it, then as events progressed, I ended up pulling the timing cover and the chain was stretched

Today I put my '97 to work, drug a trailer to my brothers with a 16' orchard ladder and a 5 tooth ripper thing for a tractor so he can dig up his gravel driveway this spring, also went to the store and got some batteries for my moms golf cart, they put 3 12V batteries in it a few months ago and it works but needs more reserve so now it has 6 12V batteries with three pairs so it's still 36V instead of doing 6 6V batteries, didn't want to put the full investment in all at once apparently... then we wired that up and did some other stuff... Since it started raining after I got there driving around on the wet grass took some pre planning at times with a 2wd with car tires...

Full 98 engine and fuel system etc....
Rebuilt the gt40-p heads, 347 short block, bcam, tm headers, t5 trans. Ran real good for 6xx miles. Now this. I was sure it was injector or coil pack. Guess I'll start looking into timing. I have threads in v8 swap with a lil more info on build/history. Thx yall. Any more suggestions are welcome

Loaded up the crew and checked fences.

Even faked getting stuck for dramatics, was told "this a mess"

Put a hitch receiver under the back. It's very hard to do with one shoulder unable to support weight. Had to use my knees and right hand to try and hold it in place while the dead left side just threaded the nuts on. I had jack stands on 4x4s holding the bumper in place.

I even found the instructions for the factory jack hidden in the jack cover
