What can I do to make sure my engine is ready to go??

Hey I just bought an 87 Bronco II with a 2.9L. It runs pretty good with no funny sounds but due to the age I want it checked out maybe change the gaskets and thermostat. I will be driving it for winter and want to make sure its ready to go. I can do a lot myself but if I take it to a mechanic what do I ask them to do an inspection or Tune-up? And what would that cost me you think? It does look like the valves could be leaking a little. Any advice what you would do to make it ready for the winter? THanks!!

Get everything for a tune up.... Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and all new fluids couldn't hurt. A thermostat isn't expensive if u need one. It's not very hard to do. A Haynes manual will tell most everything you need to know. If u have any questions pm me.

Valve cover gaskets are pretty easy on this engine also.

That would be a question for your mechanic. You can probably do it yourself for under 50 dollars though. I personally would use Motorcraft plugs only - and who knows what your mechanic would use?

Price will always be more with a mechanic because of labor rates. It shouldn't be to much money but a wise decision. Who knows how old some of the stuff has been in there. Might still be good but for how much longer. It's easier to change in the summer rather than winter.
