I was at the JY the other day nabbing a few parts out of a later 1st gen and saw these two things mounted up above the glovebox inside the dash. The bigger one had some sort of buzzer inside. The smaller one was tucked up to the right of the glovebox. The bigger one plugs into that big 'ole plug that's never plugged into anything.

top pic is probalby the chime module. it is what you hear when you open the doors or leave the lights on and take the key out of the ignition. Not sure of the bottom one.

That might be the maintenance minder. I've never seen one myself, only heard rumors. The early Rangers, some of them, were supposedly equipped with a little doo-hickey somewhere above the glove box, that would flip the emissions light on every 3-5 thousand miles to remind you to change the oil. There was a button on it you had to hold to turn the light off.

where in the lower picture is that plug/module/doo-hicky located?:icon_confused:

just reread your post ...under the dash...
evidently I was having a senior moment

Interesting. Well I'll be back next week for some other stuff. I'll take a closer look at them.

The thing I have heard is over there is for the emission light with a longer timer. It comes on to encourage you to take it in every so often to have your emission system checked out.

Once every 5 years or so my "EMISS" light comes on for a week or two, I have never been able to find the module you poke under the PS of the dash to reset it, so far it seems to reset itself which is fine by me.

Edit: Crud, only 2 years left until the frantic search begins again. I didn't think it had been that long ago...

Well, I went back to nab some other parts. While there I took a closer look at that smaller module. It had a white reset sticker on it. Took it off and there was a resent button inside.

On a different topic, that ranger at the JY has got me mighty jealous. Not even the battery tray has rust! Too bad someone beat me to the dash; I swear that truck was garage kept.

Purpose:

This device lights the EMISSIONS light on the dashboard of some 1981-1987 (?)
F-series, Broncos, Rangers, probably a host of other Ford products of the time.

The light comes on every ~60,000 miles as a reminder to service the emissions
control system, nothing more.

Identification:

This particular device I found is plastic (I understand some are metal) and is bigger than I
had imagined, about 3" long X 2.5" wide (including mounting ears and electrical
connector):

Searched the part number...yup thats what it is.

That do-hicky or something very similar was between the upper and lower glove compartments on my 87 Ranger. It was easiest to get to it by opening and squeezing each side of the lower glove compartment and letting the door just hang down. I remember it having a sticker that said "reset" on it, but I don't think it had ever been poked. And me and my dad were the only two owners since it was new and I don't remember the light coming on. The truck had a bulb behind the "EMISS" display, but not behind the "CHECK ENGINE" display.
