Hi guys i got a 96 XLT 4.0 ranger with a blown motor for free, everything else is in good shape and i happen to have a running 4.0 engine but its from a 91 explorer, both trucks have auto trannies my question is would the good engine bolt into this truck?

oh and do where would i find information as far as engine specs, changes, production all that stuff... im sure there is info out there i cant find it tho.
thanks alot

click the tech library link at the top.... look under the engines category (it should be in the upper left of the page). there is alot of good info there. hope it helps and good luck.

I know 95/96 blocks have additional bolt holes added over the 90 - 94 blocks. I don't know if the new holes are needed in the 96 for engine mounts or accessories. I just swapped a 92 Explorer into a 94 Ranger and only real things needing swapped were the Injectors and engine harness. 92 had black #19 injectors and the 94 had red top #30 ones. Oil pan gasket sealing were different but didn't really matter as pans are the same otherwise. I've been told I could have swapped in a newer than 94 block as long as swapping all sensors to the 94's and original block holes are still in the same place. I do know you have to have complete engine and cannot swap heads between the two (piston & head chamber sizes are diff).

I know member scfe8997 said he swapped a 94 Explorer engine into a 97 Explorer. So it might be possible to use that 91 Engine with harness, injectors and all sensors from the 96. Auto/Auto/Manual is the same 90 - 96 but in 97 they went from 6 to 8 bolts on flywheel but don't mater as long as using correct flywheel for Auto and bolt count. Starter is different from manual vs auto.

runtime thanks alot! i appreciate your help, i will check into the injector sizes and computer compatability, the computer was my number one concern but i hadnt thought about the injector size. the engine i have is complete and runs well, i got it out of a cheap explorer i bought basicly just for the tires, i thought i was going to soup it up and bore it out as a cheaper way to get some HP but after analyzing the cost its way cheaper just to put in a nice 5.0and tranny. anyway if i find any differences i will post them. thanks

I thought all the 4.0s used 19lb injectors???My 94 has the red tops and I have always been told they are 19s and also that I could upgrade to the blue top 24lb injectors??Are they 19s or 30s?

well one way that i check part compatability is by going to autozone.com and picking a part and comparing the part# between the vehicles in question... i know this isnt bulletproof but it works and is free, so last nite i used this hokey method to compare injectors and the computer, the injectors came back the same in both the explorer 4.0 and the ranger 4.0, the computer was not the same tho, thats not a surprise tho

I maybe wrong on red being #30 injectors. I assumed from web searches red tops where all #30. There is no standard color scheme...
