I like Spam but then again, I've dealt with military food all my adult life, so Spam is an upgrade. That, and my sense of smell has greatly diminished from all the years of working in fuel tanks. That might be why I can tolerate the military food so well...

Back when the Vietnam Vets were still running the chow hall, the SOS was great. Then either budget cuts hit or all the guys that knew how to make it retired. It went to nothing but crushed expectations and disappointment. They even found a way to ruin Shepherd's Pie.

They sell it in the store by me (Banquet maybe?). Just not as good as I remember. Hell, I used to go back for seconds, sometimes thirds - it was just that good!
BTW, their omelets in the morning or for midnight chow kicked ass too. Their food was really really good. Dinner wasn't always so great, but everything else was really good.

You guys are in my bubble. I went grocery shopping and dried beef was on my list. I couldn't find it. It's pretty simple to make. My wife isn't fond of it but I still make it once a year or so. It's good fall food...
