I'm willing to help in any way I can. What kind of suggestions are you looking for? Looks? Speed?

If I had to make one HUGE suggestion, it would be to do an AOD to T5 conversion. I did one on my 86 GT, and it made a world of difference. Mine had a 3.27 rear end, what does yours have?

well i had that thought in my head once i seen it was a automatic lol i dont know for sure what gear ratio i have yet but i will take a look tomorrow how hard is the swap and whats the parts i need and if posiable telling me best preformance add on thanks and i like your stang
:icon_hornsup: and where can i get replacment back floor pans thanks

Good car. I had one. My 86 GT was great. I bought it brand new in 86 and torn it apart 4 months later. I completely reworked the motor and suspension and bodywork. Lowered it and made it into a street legal road racer. The motor was putting out 390 hp and it had a top speed of nearly 195mph. Saleen helped me with the fuel injection setup and the newly developed cam for the 5.0. Heads were ported and polished also. I raced it at Sebring and Road Atlanta with SCCA a few times. I did the One Lap of Florida in late 1987. I have a few more photos of it sitting in my driveway and I need to get them posted on my Supermotors website.

Congrates - Love the Four Eyes - my son has a '91 GT and I have an 85 SVO. Fun, cheap and pretty easy to work on IMHO.

The 5.0/302 motor is easy to make HP with if that is what you're looking for. Exhaust, mass air, and throttle body will open it up to breath and then if you are more serious intake and heads and gears make it all better.

Enjoy the ride.. ;-)

That was a nice cruiser car, Bro. Love the convertible with the luggage rack!! I almost bought one as well, but knew I was going to end up racing it with SCCA and that is the only reason why I changed my mind.

The AOD to T5 swap is fairly simple if you have a friend to help. My friend and I have done 3 total swaps; my 86 GT, and his 91 GT, and 91 LX. The 86 is easier because there is no airbag to screw with. Your current ECU will work great with it, so no need to replace it. Below is a good write up in the link I have saved.

AOD to T5 swap: http://www.westcoastmustangs.com/articles/tech/t5swap/t5swap.html

The unfortunate thing about an 86 is they are the only year that had the E6SE heads, which were the same heads that came on Crown Vics. This meant they also used different pistons. So aftermarket heads are kind of an "iffy" deal. However, there are several people who have used production (meaning off a Cobra or 5.0 Explorer) GT40 or GT40P heads in unison with the factory cam. In other words, I don't suggest doing heads and a cam, just heads. Don't bother with the E7TE heads, they will be a waste of time. I have the P heads, and love them. I got them for about $200 off a 67,000 mile Explorer. If you get higher mileage heads, I would change the valve springs.

I use CJ Pony Parts, and love their service, and FREE shipping. I would strongly suggest replacing the entire floorpan if you ever plan on racing it. The pan is a weak link in the drivers seat area (I know from experience). I also suggest getting subframe connectors like the pic below that actually tie in to the drivers seat rear bolts.

Here's the floor pans:

Here are the subframe connector type I'm talking about:

Also, I would suggest taking the intake manifold and 65mm throttle body from a 5.0 Explorer. They flow much like the 93 Cobra manifold. And if you use P heads, you need certain types of headers due to the revised spark plug angle. I can help point you in the right direction if you go that route.

Here are some pics of what mine has:

My Brentech headers (around $130)

EDIT: If you are in a state with picky emissions, let me know and I can tell you some changes that are required to do P heads. I haven't had issues, but P heads require the pipe on the back of the heads to be removed. I pass the sniffer better with the P heads though, just pointing out that it might give issues on the visual if you get a douchebag for an emissions tech.

I have an extremely nice rear seat out of an 86 GT, in case you get to the point where you might want to replace some of the interior. It came out of a 40k original miles car. I also have 3 front seats (2 passenger, one driver), but they are in the same shape if not worse than your current seats. You would be surprised at how good those seats will clean up with a good shampooing and gentle cleaning.

My understanding on the E6 heads is you can change heads or have an HO cam, but not both. I have a CV 5.0 in my Ranger with them.

If has been rebuilt at any time and had pistons with valve reliefs put in you are good to go. :icon_thumby:
