i have been noticing grinding and squeking in my sterring wheel so i get to looking at the shaft and there is a rubber boot that looks it covers a u joint and the rubber around is tore in 2 pieces. so my ? is do i have to pull the whole thing and replace the entire shaft or can i pull it up far enough to replace the joint and boot. by the way its a 99

It depends on how the axle joint is fairing.. You would be better off taking it all the way out and cleaning the grease off and seeing if it looks ok. Because you could have gotten dirt in there... actually more then likely since you noticed it when it started grinding. You are more then likely looking for a new axle shaft.

you have the exact same truck do you understand what im talking about

Don't know if your year is the same as '94 but I was able to seperate the "intermediate shaft" and replace the rubber. It came off at the steering box and the steering column itself.
