Well, how about an '06?

I recently looked at an 01' 4 by 4 XLT with low miles. You guys helped me out with some engine stuff I didn't know; and thanks for that. Turns out, the frame was real bad. Today, I looked at an '06 with 66K. Frame doesn't look bad, this time. I could live with it. It has a 4.0 SOHC and an automatic. How many miles am I gonna get out of this, given the fact that I take very good care of things but don't want to get into an entire engine or transmission rebuild or replace. It seems to drive great, engine sounds mint and I left $100 deposit to sleep on it. Other than its being canary yellow, what will I hate about this truck?

Thanks...

They are good engines, most of the bug were worked out by 07. The trans is awesome. It was everything the A4LD should have been but never was.

Think of the 5R55E like the STD-free twin sister of that stripper at the tittie bar. Much better stuff in the same casing.

If you take good care of it, change the fluids, keep up with things, you should get 200K miles easy. Honestly, if she ever gives out, I'd look at a new engine and trans. It's cheaper than a car.

Good way to look at it...

That is an analogy I will think of, every time I turn the key to that truck! I love analogies and that is a good one....it makes me "get it!" In fact, it may have sold me on the truck!

The electronic braking seems a little complicated. Will it be needing scan tool or lap top to reset things, if it blows a break line, or the like? That's something I have usually done on my vehicles....

No, the worst thing that should ever need in regards to a computer and a blown brake line is if the line blows out above the ABS module.

I've seen that once.

How about fuel filling

Thanks again!!...got another question, though...

When I was checking out the frame, I noticed the fuel filler pipe between the neck and the tank is only about an inch around. Seems like it would be hard to fill; but I have never heard it mentioned as a problem. Ever hear of trouble with fill ups?

The actual filler hose in my ranger is only about an inch or so in diameter. the outer house is a little over 2 inches.

No fill up problems for my truck.

Every Ford has trouble with filling up once in a while during the summer at some point in it's life.

You take the vapor vent tube out, blow the spider web out of there, and BAM, it's fixed.

Where do you live that the frame on the first truck was so bad? If you live in an area that uses salt or other chemicals on the roads in the winter you might want to consider bolstering the frame with some rust paint or other protection to ensure that it doesn't come to the same end as the first one...

It doesn't take much work to do the rear part (like remove the bed and have at it) of the frame but the front can be a bit more complicated...definitely worth the time and money though...just a suggestion...unless you have a thing about replacing vehicles every 5 or ten years...

That, to me, is like dumping girlfriends every couple of years just to have something newer to play with...I'm kinda monogamous...if I could ever find a girl to hang around long enough...:)

Trouble letting go

Yeah, I have trouble letting go, too....my current Ranger has 226K. It's getting some body rust now, though. The transmission makes an occasional clunk when in overdrive and on fairly steep highway grades. One down-pipe is held with only one bolt now, due to rust and it has a few oil leaks. I don't mind the leaks so much because the leaking oil keeps stuff from rusting. But it drives just as good as the truck I am looking to buy.

I live on Cape Cod. Sounds like sun and beach, but it's more like wet and road salt. I can't really complain about my '93 frame but the '01 I looked at must have been beached, because it was toast all over. I have seen another '02 with a hole in the frame big enough to put two fists through. Even this '06, which is one owner from the Cape as well, is no virgin. But it is solid and can be saved. I might do just that: Take the bed off and have at it!

By the way, thanks for the spider web tip! I haven't had that one yet, but I will definetly keep it in the memory banks....

Inertia switch

After a cup of coffee and an internet search for "2006 ranger problems" (and illiminating all the whiners) I have concerns about the fuel pump inertia switch. Seems like there is a definete trend, there. It seems that, although there has been no recall, there is an improved switch available. How can I visually tell if it has the updated style? I'm thinking of having the selling dealer (Toyota, but reputable) get me this switch as part of the sale price...or at least, their discount. Thoughts on this?

Thanks again,
Bill

You could try looking at the switch for the part number. If it doesnt end in a it is probably the new one.

They arent really that big an issue though. I have yet to see on just go bad. If you are really that worried just eliminate it. Its a secondary safety since the fuel pump is run pff the crank signal if a fuel line breaks the pump will shut off.

Cut and paste

Well, I know there are a lot of non-mechanical whiners out there who blame everything on Ford. One guy blamed Ford because he had dry-rotted tires, which blew out causing an accident. I can't make this stuff up. But the inertia switch thing was mentioed by a dozen different people, most of whom's trucks just shut off. I hate it when that happens!! Anyway, I am cutting and pasting this qoute, which sums up the trend the best of what I read:

THE FIRST INCIDENT I WAS DROPPING MY GRANDDAUGHTER OFF AT SCHOOL WENT OVER A SPEED BUMP AND THE TRUCK STALLED OUT HAD IT TOWED HOME AND IT STARTED ONCE OFF THE TOW TRUCK.THIE SECOND INCIDENT I WAS GOING THROUGH A PARKING LOT AND WENT OVER A SPEED BUMP AND THE TRUCK STALLED OUT, HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED AND THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP. THE NEXT INCIDENT I WAS IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC ON A FEEDER ROAD AND IT STALLED WAS NEXT TO THE SERVICE STATION WHERE IT WAS PREVIOUSLY FIXED AND AFTER APOLICEMAN STOPPED TRAFFIC AND HAD ME PUSHED TO THE SERVICE STATION WAS TOLD BY A SENIOR TECHNICIAN THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN ISSUE ON THE RANGER AND TO PUSH THIS BUTTON WHENEVER IT HAPPENED. I HAVE BEEN DOING THIS A LOT SINCE THIS TIME AND HAVE HAD SOME VERY CLOSE CALLS DUE TO THE STALLING, WITH THE LATEST ALMOST CAUSING A MAJOR ACCIDENT DUE TO OCCURRING A HIGH SPEED AFTER HITTING A ROAD BUMP. THE INERTIA SWITCH ON FORD RANGER?S 2003 THROUGH 2006 ARE DEFECTIVE IN THREE MANNERS ONE THE CONNECTORS BURN DUE TO A HIGH CURRENT DRAW, THE SWITCH ACTIVATES WITHOUT WARNING, AND DUE TO NO KICKPLATE PASSENGERS CAN ACTIVATE THE SWITCH. THIS SWITCH IS USED TO CUT THE FUEL OFF DURING A ROLL OVER CRASH SCENARIO. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET IN REGARD TO THE FIRE AND SAFETY ISSUES THIS DEFECTIVE PART HAS CAUSED. TO DATE FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL, OR NOTIFIED THE CONSUMER BASE OF THE POTENTIAL HAZARDS SURROUNDING THIS ISSUE, BUT HAS ISSUED A REDESIGNED SWITCH THAT NOW COMES WITH A COVER AND UPDATED CONNECTOR FOR PURCHASE WHEN REPLACING THE OLD SWITCH. PLEASE INVESTIGATE SINCE PEOPLE'S LIVES ARE BEING IMPACTED DUE TO THE MULTIPLE SAFETY ISSUES AND ALSO DUE TO THE COST ASSOCIATED WITH DIAGNOSING THIS ISSUE. MY COST TO DATE IS IN EXCESS OF $1300.00, AND I AM IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING IT MYSELF DUE TO MY CONCERNS.

I will check it out as best I can, to be safe. Sounds like it shouldn't be TO hard to see....

My Tempo had a wonky inertia switch too (1989)...after, ahem, replacing the engine, transmission (long story) and having an idiot mechanic test my front rotors with his ball peen hammer (that I had to eventually replace...the rotor, not his hammer) it was found to be the inertia switch had fried and was causing sporadic shut downs...usually on the highway at speed...

Hope you find that to be the problem...easy enough fix, but confusing...even to, ahem, experienced techs...

Just go buy it already! Replace the inertia switch if it wasn't already and enjoy the ride. That truck shouldn't cost you anymore that a few oil changes or so a year to own. My '02 has been a great truck and has been put through its paces quite often. Never asks for more than an oil change, windshield wipers and occasionally a set of tires. 208,8XX miles and counting.
