welding to the frame?

What do you guys think about welding sliders directly to the frame? I just saw the slider thread with the mounts bolted to the body mount brackets, Its to late for that. The sliders have mounting plates that would lay flat against the frame. The problem is on the driver side, where the mounts are gonna be there is the gas filter, and the gas tank. This is an old NY truck that has never had the tank out of it. So inorder to drill the mounting holes in the frame the tank needs to come out. That is just looking for trouble, with everything so rusty and set up underneath.

well welding right infront of the gas tank isnt the best thing in the world. I have on occasion welded near gas/fuel tanks. Its sketchy. I always did it with a tip top full fuel tank as there is less room for vapor.i also put a vacuum pump on the evap system line and suck the vapor out near the front of the truck an put the tank into an almost "vacuum" if its obd 1 you can remove the charcoal canister line and pull from there. I also herd of some guys fulling the tank with argon or another inert gas. Nothing above that i said is me saying go ahead and do it.....but if you did........i might do it like that.......


or you could unbolt and drill it..............

There are several who have welded straight to the frame, although I personally wouldn't do it.

The frame tends to flex a lot, and any welds would be more likely to cause cracking of the frame over time (particularly in the area between the rear cab mounts, and the forward leaf spring hangers).

If you do decide to weld it, make sure the fuel & brake lines, wiring, etc. is all out of the way so the heat doesn't destroy them.

my suggestion would be to bolt it to the frame and maybe bolt an extra crossmember or two for extra support.
