If you're not using .023 wire, you might want to try that as well. The thicker stuff just blows big holes through it in my experience.

think of placement sort of like torquing a head until you have closed the seam.

I converted my stick welder into a TIG for just over $200 (including filling the argon bottle I had). It has to be an AC/DC unit to do this.
Ask the salsman at your welding supply if they sell all the stuff to make the conversion. It's not a fancy foot pedal set-up, but I like it alot better than my MIG for sheet metal.
Don't worry about your welds looking pretty, thats what the grinder is for.
