hey
i have a 2wd truck that i go mudding with.but its also my daily driver.i am 16 years old will be 17 soon.i was wondering if it is a bad idea to weld the diff or not.what would it do if i did.also does anyone have anypictures to show where actually to weld .
thanks
ryan

On your DD, not a good idea.

Most of the time when people have to ask, its not right for them.

What axle do you have in the rear? I spooled my 8.8 and its my DD that I drive about 100 miles a day on and its no problem at all. In fact I broke my mini spool and ended up welding it back together, but my favorite part of it is that it is completely predictable while driving. Make sure somebody welds it who knows how to weld professionally.

Otherwise Aussies are awesome!

its teh 8.8 axle.what is spooled..like i dont know axles..but i do know welding thats for sure. if i weld it whats the bad part of it..y is it a bad idea? also if i decide to weld it..where do u lay the beads.
thanks
ryan

Spooled / welded... same function (no differentiation), a spool is just a solid carrier for the ring gear.

Drawbacks... no differentiation. This means dragging and chirping the tires around every turn (not so good for tire wear, as well as attracting the attention of LEOs).

I would agree with the others and suggest the Aussie Locker or a Lockright for a truck that sees street use.

ok then.how difficult is it to install one of these lockers?
thanks

hell, everywhere besides here on TRS, lunch box lockers are seen as garbage. theyre even called "a poor mans locker". i just spoke to someone who just put a lockright in his truck and he hates it. its noisey and ive even heard of the springs being prone to failure. everyone who has one wants to get rid of them.

i just bought a new trac-loc for $204 vise the lockright, $285,(which was highly recommended by several gear n axle shops for a dd and low budget) and so far i like it alot. its no torsen but its smooth and i dont loose traction.

RANGERRAGER, id honestly go to a junk yard and find an explorer with a limited slip in it or even better and FX4 ranger with a Torsen LS and swap the entire rearend. just my opinion!

u WILL be bitchin about that track lock the first time u have togo through any real mud.....every truck ive gotten with a traclock or gov lock locker has come out in favor of a REAL locker

also, lots of people bag on the lunchbox lockers because people just regurgitate whatever someone else says, if u actually run one u will love how they work

and who cares about sound when running a LOCKER.......i mean honestly, why put a locker in the truck if ur gonna bitch about the sound

Ran a lockright for 2 years with 35" tires and never had one bit of problem with it, performed flawlessly. I've heard of people having problems with the "quicklocks" but not so much with the actual Pwertrax Lockright.

When I ran a lock-right I loved it.

Everyone else that I know running lunch box lockers love them also. This ranges from Dana 44's to 10.25's/14 bolts's on DD's and wheelers, fronts and rears.

ive ran a loc-rite in the rear for a couple years, and so far the only thing i dont like is that my right foot keeps breaking the thrupin

While I am ok with my Lockrite, I understand where they're coming from. I really wish I had gone with an ARB. The excessive backlash from a Lockrite is annoying, esp in double low. It is fairly predictable on the road, but will sometimes lock unexpectedly when going around corners.

And it also puts excessive strain on the cross shaft, which can be problematic under heavy throttle. Although I have never had a failure so far.

evan, thanks for the honest opinion. some people are just too proud. the guy at 4wheelparts refused to sell me a lockright(more expensive) and recommended a new trac loc beacause it was fit for my needs(daily driver).

mhughes: i researched getting a lockright because i heard so many good things about them on here but when i started asking the right people(shops who do this as a profession, competition crawlers) they laughed at me and some even called me a jackass for considering the lockright. i didnt buy a used trac-loc but i still dont expect it to perform like a torsen either.

rangerrager: if you can save up the cash, get an detroit locker but if your strapped, get a trac-loc. a limited slip is ideal for the daily driver. especially for a 2wd.

Not everyone has the cash for a full carrier locker. Lunch box lockers work great, and this is what I and a LOT of others I know think.
