I've been getting a bit better gas mileage lately since fixing the vac leak, but decided yesterday to try to tweak the carb a bit...wasn't too successful and ended up just putting it back to where I thought it should be...

Today I drive (limp) down the highway and it was bucking, lugging and just about anything but run decent...I farted around a bit more with it and decided to head home to check the timing...along the way it suddenly starts running right...:icon_confused:

I was thinking this was maybe either bad gas, a vac leak (that I happened to notice the PCV cannister was loose and even after pushing it down it still acted up), or maybe fuel filter on the carb was plugged...

Any thoughts?

Nothing I did seemed to correct it instantly, but pushing it (as in accelerator to the floor) down the highway eventually got it sorted out...only thing out of sorts that I noticed was the gas guage dropped from half a tank to an eighth in about 20 kms...but then it sprang back up to about a quarter tank...put about $20 worth of gas in and it now shows almost full...

Shorting wire? bad gas? dirty filter?

:icon_confused:

Ok since it is carburated and im guessing that the fuel pump is on the block. im thinking that its not a carburator problem at all. the gas guage thing makes me think that it could be a problem with the sending unit or the gas lines. I would run some marvel mystery oil through it first and go from there

The pump is actually electronic...the block I used did not have a place for the manual pump so I just bought a low pressure pump and attached it to the frame...I did notice a chunk of gunk in the filter when I reconnected everything, but I thought it fell out with the gas...

Marvel Mystery OIL? Do I have to go to a body rub parlor to get that?

Update...

The little pcv cannister that attaches to the block was loose and causing a vac leak...

Always something simple...

Oh, and I also managed to dislodge the needle in the carb somehow and lost half a tank of gas when it kept overflowing...

Very expensive week...

One more update...

Two stage carb...two jets...one for first stage was plugged...with a piece of teflon tape....

First time I've had a problem like that...and I've been using teflon tape on this truck for about ten years...

Now I know better...tightened the filter up as far it would go into the carb...after, of course, removing the rest of the teflon tape...

She runs like a dream...again...
