hello everyone. i have a 2002 ranger xlt 3.0. just rebuilt the engine this summer. and been having problems with it ever since. the problem i am having now is it has a rough idle. i have replaced and done the following things. repaced the plugs wires. coil, cam pos sensor, crank pos sensor, had a misfire on cylinder #3 multiple times so i swapped injectors to see if the misfire transferred to another cylinder which it did not..have done a compression test when hot and cold. i hooked up the timing light to the wires and some cylinders make a slow pulse and some of them make slow ones. and it isnt consistent different cylinders vary between fast pulse and slow pulse

i bought the truck off my uncle when he seized the engine(lack of oil) i thought it was a descent truck. it had the trans rebuilt less than a year ago ad the heads were redone about the same time. bought it for 400$ thinking all i had to do to it was rebuilt the engine and i had a really nice truck for under 1500$ anyways i completely overhauled the motor. bored .30 over new pistons, rings, bearings whole nine yards. and yes i beleivve I'm haveing misfires with #3 when i pull #3 cylinder injecter wire off there is no change in the idle speed. but pulling off another cylinders injector wire it changes dramatically. ive taken the wireing harness completely off and inspecting every wire. doing continuity tests and ohmn tests on every wire. and redid all the grounds

What does the computer come up with for trouble codes?

How does the number 3 plug look?

Sounds like your being pretty thorough in going thru everything. The compression looks good across all cylinders?

the plug looks great. just like all the other ones. trouble codes it comes up with #3 most of the time. got a #2 yesterday. compression looks good. tested it hot and cold

Is it a decent wire set? Maybe the routing is causing issues? Shoot I don't know.
Maybe run it at night and look for some stray electrical action?

can the routing of the plugs wires actually make it do that? i dont have them routed to factory right now bc ive just been havein to take stuff on and off the engine that i just leave them all on top of the motor but out of the way of getting melted

Had just had an issue with my 99 3.0. I had a cyl 3 misfire code. Replaced the coil, it was still the original (struck was parked for 6 years). Ran fine... next morning barely made it the mile to work. Did more reading and found that the wire for the coil c (3) was broke. I soldered it back and it runs likes champ!
