Hello everyone,

First, I’d like to explain the situation that myself and other local 4x4 enthusiasts have been forced into. In Saskatchewan, our vehicle insurance and registration is handled by a crown corporation called SGI. Since they are controlled by the government, they can effectively pass laws in regards to vehicles and traffic in general.

A few months ago, SGI released a policy in regards to lifted vehicles, without consulting the public, 4x4 owners, or any companies who sell lift related parts. The policy was ridiculous; It effectively banned lifted vehicles all together. A few local clubs gathered together and protested enough to get the policy rescinded. As a result, SGI held meetings with 4x4 owners in an effort to come up with a fair policy that would take both safety and our investments into consideration.

As of last week, a new policy was introduced. Many of us, including myself, are not happy with the results. One of the notable new policies is that vehicles with tires over 35” will be limited to 80km/hr on any road that is marked 100km/hr, and 90km/hr on any road that is marked 110km/hr. There are also extra inspections for lifted vehicles. Any parts that I have built myself may be failed upon inspection. There are also new frame height restrictions in addition to the old restriction of a 29.5” bumper height. They are tiered, and based on GVWR. A ranger must not have a frame taller than 29”. Even my truck, on fullwidth one ton axles and brakes.

I would appreciate it if anyone on here would take a few minutes of their time and send an email to raisedvehiclefeedback@sgi.sk.ca to express their concerns with the new policy. We are a small group of enthusiasts, and any number of emails would likely help us out. I like my truck, and I’d like to continue to safely drive it on the road rather than sell it to recoup some of my investment if the policy goes through. My truck, and many others are simply too nice and well built to become trail only rigs.

The new policy can be found here.

Thanks :icon_thumby:

man thats ridiculous. do you guys have anything like the Sema Action Network there? They do a lot of good for fighting stupid laws like that in America.

One of the guys had contacted SEMA when the first policy went through. I don't think they even got a response.

Again, I'd like to encourage everyone to send an email if you have a minute. That's what got the policy rescinded the first time.

I'll send one, but I don't think an email from this side of the border would help much.

Yay...more inspections. I've sent one asking a few specific questions....

Oh, and if it makes ya feel better, I'd fail too....Unless I registered before jan 1st 2011. My frame height is 30" according to their rules.

Thanks Andrew.

I could probably pass the frame height stuff, but all of the home built parts would likely fail the inspection. By no stretch of the imagination is anything unsafe, it just doesn't have a company's name on it. Go figure.

Give me a call after you're home from BC. I'll be in Ft. Mcmurray by then but I'm planning on heading back to Edmonton for the weekends anyways.

I've posted this over on BC4x4.com

I'd assume that if SGI can get away with it, ICBC out here would soon follow suit.

Greatly appreciated.

That's exactly right. It's happening here first, and it's just a matter of time before other provinces see what has been done and come up with their own similar policy. They will look at this one as a guideline.

Then comes the rules for any other modified vehicles - lowered cars, hot rods, ect. It's a slippery slope.

I asked specifically about the home built parts and how they're gonna test them. Is it an instant fail vs. NDT inspection and engineer's review of design etc.... I'll give ya a shout as soon as I'm back.

I would just avoid saying that you're not from Saskatchewan. :dunno:

Will do. It's a damn shame they have to ruin the fun for everyone some way or another. I've looked your truck over quite a few times and it's sweet. Hate to see all that work and craftsmanship go to waste.

Thanks Andrew.

What would keep you from having your parts powder coated red, and having some Skyjacker stickers slapped on there?
I'm not saying it would be the "right" thing to do, but it's a thought.
I'll send an email.
