79' 302 w original water pump.. Goin from vbelts to serpentine.. Can I keep the same pump or is it spinning the wrong way? Or does it matter. I already sealed the back of the pump up and im pretty sure the fan blades were angled so the water can only spin one way to reach the engine ya?

If your 79 302 had V belts, it's a std rotation pump. Can't reverse it and still have flow. And to go to a reverse rotation pump and get optimum flow, you'll need to change the timing cover as well as the pump. Ford used a reverse pump on the std rotation timing cover on the Mustangs from 79-85, but in 86 they reversed the timing cover porting to in their words "improve the cooling" on the 86 Stangs (and pickups/vans too).

You can see what they changed in the ports.

Another perk with a later cover is you won't have to get a cover to potentially leak for the fuel pump. :icon_thumby:

And that's just 6 of the small block timing covers, I've seen at least a half dozen to a dozen more variations.

Yeah, mine isn't listed. (no dipstick hole, std rotation and a boss for a fuel pump that is filled in)

Gives a guy an idea what to look for though. :icon_thumby:

Ok great, thx for the help.. Ill have to go check what cover I have and maybe in the end just stick with the old water pump and timing cover, and obviously the vbelts.. If I get standard v8 pullys for my 3.0L alt and p/s plus the correct brackets it should all fit and align properly wth the adjusters ya?

On something that new I dunno.

On mine the alternator did, I think the PS pump would have too but since mine was a howler I took a chance on the one that came with the engine and it worked fine.

that is using the stock ranger pulleys? or v8 ones I assume ya?

You can use serpentine (6 rib..) belts with a standard rotation pump, if your accessories are placed in a suitable spot. Crown Vics (etc.) in the 80's used two 6 rib belts, with a double crank pulley.

I had to switch the alternator pulley, the 2.8 was V belt and the 302 is micro V.

Not really a serpantine setup with mine, it is the dual belt setup Teddyzee was talking about. Without AC or smog pump you only need the one belt. If I had to do it again (and I intend to redo it) I will go with a shorter setup like an Explorer or 94-95 Mustang to free up more room.

Ya no smog or a/c w mine..just wp,crank alt and alt. Is that diagram of the 302 setup? I thought the alt was top left on the belt (pass side)?

I guess it doesnt really matter where the accessories are as long as they line up and the brackets are secure..as TeddyZ said.

The simple way for re-routing the belt is to remember that with reverse rotation pumps, the belt goes between the water pump pulley and crank pulley. You can often put the belt in a number of places with any given setup.

My current one is reverse rotation, but instead of the typical Mustang/Explorer way of having the belt across the top of the engine bay, I flipped my alt upside down, and the belt then goes over PS and ALT, but under the WP. Belt and accessories just about disappear.

It depends, there are a bunch of different setups. That is the 302 setup that is on my truck at this very moment.
