Want to race the Baja 1000

if you're planning this run for 2012 or later, count me in for one of the chase trucks! :yahoo:
no charge, just want the experience... just like you.

Now thats info I can really use! If I can make this happen, Ill take you up on that for sure!

There has been so much info on here and my other post in the general section, thanks so much guys, I really apreciate it!

Once I can get more numbers figured out, Ill be sure to share.

:icon_cheers:

i had 22k figured for a 4 cyl ranger effort. with 5 guys going in with part of the drive and co ride each.

that was not including chase trucks.

had it down to 6-7 k each for a fun just to say we did it effort.(members of this very board)

at that point i was advised by my wife to let it go for awhile. (i am really sugar coating that response) though...that was because i was working on the low end and already donated an engine to a race team local, then another the next year and yet another out west after that. for vehicles i never will race. 3300, 4700, and 4200 in total costs respectively. i plan to build another bottom and trans for the last for spares....but money is even harder to come by this year.

regardless, i know if a small group were committed and scrimped and scrounged for a year they would have the capitol to do a base build and run the following year. i am not prepared to do this for a few years personally and is the real reason i let it go for the time being.

but, unless some tragedy happens, i will be eventually.

:dunno:
just throwing it out there as it seems possibly relevant.

Thanks for the info. When I started conjuring up ths whole plan I was thinkng 5-8 grand split between myself and one or two really good buddys to have the adventure of our life and say we did it. Now its looking closer to 5-8grand EACH! With all the info I have gathered so far, I would be foolish to think I could build a cheap truck and go for it without some really good support.

That was my orginal plan too. Build as solid of a truck that I could, drive slow and carefull, only pit every 250 mi, not wory about my "class" and just make it across the finish line. I overslimplified it a bit, I mean hey, 1000 mi, 32 hrs, that means I only need to average a little over 31mph, no problem! Little did I know..

Im not giving up though, just gathering as much info as I can from whomever I can, reforming my plan, and extending my time line. For as big of an event as this is, there really isnt a ton of info out there to be read, and there isnt a tone of desert racers here in Chicago...

Racing is like horses: good way to make a small fortune out of a large one ,lol. Start with a rule book ,budget out what it takes for personal eguip etc . Check out racing junk.com will give you idea on some costs. Definately not raining on your parade. I say go for it ,it may take a while that's all. Good luck and let us know !!

Not to shoot down your dreams but racing in the Baja 1000 is a huge expense. My uncle's good friend owns a trophy truck which alone exceeds $300,000. Even with his sponsors, like Slime, he still forks out a huge amount of cash. He's been racing for quite a few years now and finishing the race is still a huge accomplishment, much less actually placing. I mean especially with gas prices now I can't even imagine how expensive it is just to trailer your vehicle down there, fuel your race truck and the support vehicles. And that is just one aspect. If you really wanna race it I would suggest the VW class, considering that a lot of VW parts are relatively inexpensive. Also I believe there are race truck owners that "rent" their trucks and support teams out for those races like the 500 and 1000. It's still very expensive to rent these trucks but if you are looking for the experience, it may be a more viable option.

Anyways, good luck man. I hope you can race it someday, that'd be pretty sweet.

You wouldn't be talking about Pistol Pete, would you?

pedro pistola. he gets banned from every board he logs on to.

Is your uncle Fast Eddy?

No he's not. My uncle isn't in the race industry unfortunately :bawling:. He used to done some of the challenger and buggy races, but he doesn't race anymore. He worked with Pete when Pete worked for his dad. When his dad retired my uncle started up his own business and took over his clientele. Pete went on to other stuff like go carts and desert racing. If any of you boys are down in Phoenix, check out Speedway :icon_cheers:. It's a blast and there are pictures of Pistol Pete everywhere lol.
