My mechanic wanted to change my clutch cause he says it's worn out. I said no because it works perfectly fine and still does the job. I'm hoping to get maybe 10k more which for me is another year and a half.
My question is if I wait to long and only get it changed after It starts to lose it grip will this just cause more damage and make my repair bill much bigger?
It's a 96, 2.3L with only 110kms, I must be a bad manual driver.
I was quoted $790 for new clutch and slave, which is why I'm hoping for another year before I have to pay this.

$790?

for a clutch job?

Gimme a break...

the parts cost ~$200 for a CENTERFORCE clutch

and if it takes more than 2.5hours to do the job he is spending too
much time masterbating to internet porn while he's supposed to be working.

If this is a 2wd truck I woudn't just find another mechanic I'd shoot that one first.

Way back when, I think 2000 or 2001, I had a clogged oil pickup. The mechanic pulled the tranny and lifted the engine to get the oil pan off.

He called and said I needed a new clutch. That was at 56,000. I said no! At 95,000 my slave cylinder was bad so I pulled the tranny to replace it and the clutch. I did replace the clutch but I've kept it because it was worn less than 1/16". I measured the thickness of the new clutch as compared to the old and that's all the wear I had.

I'd want to see that clutch before I OK'd the replacement. 110kms isn't a lot.

I replaced mine at 173k and I only did it b/c I was doing flywheel and at it anyways. It really did not look bad then.

yeah 790 is kind of high, I have heard 600 around my part.

the fee included new master slave aswell

The clutch resevoir was empty so he said that meant the master slave was leaking. I added a few tablespoons of fluid to top it off 5 weeks ago and it hasn't dropped since but I havnt been driving much. Will it still leak if its parked?
The clutch grabs okay and I can do burnouts no prob if I wanted to. A friend of mine did confirm that it engages with the pedal pretty high and said that this meant the clutch might be wearing thin or if I'm lucky justs needs to be bled of air bubbles.
It is pretty sad when some mechanics ignorantly say you must replace something when in reality its only half worn and has plenty of life.

The point of engagement of the pedal has nothing to with clutch wear on a hydrolic clutch which yours is. If the fluid is going down you have a leaking slave most likely.

If you are having someone go in there to replace the slave, you might aswell do the clutch while is it apart anyway.

I'm trying to figure out if leakage is a problem

I thought it was normal to top off clutch fluid once in a while. I topped it off 5 weeks ago and it hasn't dropped since. but I havn't really been using my truck much at all. So I guess what I'm asking is
Will the slave still leak if it's not in use?
Or would it only leak when driving?
