I know I'm posting this in the wrong place, but I'm in a hurry and I know that the General Discussions get viewed quicker.

I'm in the process of a SAS on a 2000 Ranger.

I found a guy parting out an 85 Wagoneer.

Because I'm young he's playing me as a fool and telling me to make an offer.

Well, I am young and a fool, so I'm comming to you all for a good offer to make. I don't want to pay too much and I don't want to low ball him (too much)

I'm looking at buying from him the front D44 with the leaf packs and steering components.

What's a good starting offer?

I know there's two years where Jeep used a vaccume hub system (or somethin) was the 85 one of those years?

Edit: I called the guy about the hubs and he said it was the three toob vacume system. Can this be modified and used on a ranger? What would be involved in that?

Other thoughts:
Hows the AMC 20 (I think thats what it is) compaired to an 8.8" or a 9"?
I know that Jeep had two different sizes of wagoneers and one used a 5x4.5 lug pattern and one used a 5x5.5 pattern. If this D44 is a 5x4.5 it would work really well with my 8.8? and if it's a 5x5.5 I could swap in a 9" to match up, right?

Sorry for mess of words.

Help?

Thanks,
Adam

well im not shure about that AMC 20 but i think that if u got it and got some one pice axleshafts that are stronger then stock u would have no problems, but ur still gonna run 37's no? yes? lol

what did you find out about that vacume stuff? did 4wheel parts say it can be replaced with warn hubs?

And 4wheelparts sells a spindle nut kit for the conversion. It'll run me 110 plus hubs.

ah, so r u gonna do it? if u r just let me know when and were to meet you.

i'd say run an 8.8 or 9" instead of the Amc 20....As for the front, how much did you think is a fair offer?

yea thats my thought, but isnt the 8.8 and 9 inch diffrent bolt patterns then a AMC 20? i beleave he wants to run he same bol pattern all the way around

I'm pickin up the D44 with leafs for 250. It's a 5x5.5 lug pattern so I'm thinkin I'll stick a Ford 9" in the rear. (I bet some one is laughing about sticking a 9" in the rear lol) That should keep it 5x5.5 all the way around

if you ran an RBV 8.8, you could just buy adapters...but a 9" is good for other reasons, not just bolt pattern...

ok this thread looks like a train wreck. arent you buying a waggy d44 to be the proper width? if so why in the heck would you use a 9inch? 9inch is going to require almost everything to be custom fabed. (driveshafts, u-joints, shorten the axle housing and find axles that fit etc.) if you go with a exploder 8.8 you dont have to do anything except flip over the leaf perches and find/order axles with 5 on 5.5. worst case you get spacers that convert you to 5 on 5.5 and ajust the backspacing to compensate.

our own web page says the proper 8.8 can take 37's and is the proper width not to mention it says the samething for a 9inch. short of the fact a 9inch is a third member set up you have no reason to use one. i have seen d44s running much larger than 35's but thats the biggest recommended so the d44 is whats holding you back from running larger tires NOT the 8.8 or the 9 inch.

A 9 inch out of an early bronco would be the right width.... not that they're easy to find sometimes.

Ok, So I should go for an exploder 31 spline 8.8" and this D44, and use spacers to keep the same lug pattern front and rear. Am I reading this correctly?

I understand what you're sayin with the 3rd member, I wasn't thinking through everything.

I see EB 9" axles all the time around here for pretty cheap. I figured it would be a decent choice in the swap. It's pretty rare to come across an explorer rear in these parts.

I'd like to run 37'' tires but I don't have the extra money to repair shit all the time. And they're heavy as all hell.

Anyway, I'm pullin the axle out of the waggy tomorrow morning.

you are reading the exploder/d44 combo correctly. get the specs on the waggy d44 and find out the total width from hub to hub and find a 8.8 of similar width. i dont know the waggy specs off hand but there are enough choices of 8.8 widths you should get close enough in width. if you have the time find a matching gear ratio in the 8.8 (if it is acceptable for your uses) to save on re-gearing. if you or one of the people helping you have never done gears it is best off sent to a proffesional. i would reccomend rebuilding the d44 and your rearend of choice before install to help minimize the down time of your truck. when i say rebuild i am including brakes, fluids, calipers, hubs etc. you will be best off building the front or the back of the truck completely before you start on the other end. this allows you to build the lift height to match and helps prevent the saggy or nose down stance.
